Suggested explanation that Latinos from Central America are more familiar with open-air markets whereas African Americans grew up on supermarkets Hypothesis For this experiment I hypothesize that Farmers’ Market produce is fresher and of higher quality, but comparable supermarket produce (organic) is cheaper and available in higher quantities. The Farmers’ Market also sells more “unique” in-season produce that is not available at supermarkets. My hypothesis is based off of studies I found regarding Farmers’ Markets and customer satisfaction, vendor-customers relationships, and reasons for vendor participation. I want to find out if Farmers’ Markets are a viable, full-time alternative to supermarket produce in terms of quality and economy. Method of Experiment 1 Local Farmers’ Market and 2 nearby Supermarkets Record of Observations o Produce available and competitive options o Quality of produce (rot, dents) o Price o Comparison of produce and its “regularity” of availability (sale of unique items) Materials This study will include the use of photographs and written records of observations.
