Name: Morgan Ecret Mock Interview 1 In your write up, include a short description of the client and the nature of the issue to be discussed. Note that each helper and client response should be numbered so that the instructor can refer to them. Under the “Your Comments” section, discuss your thoughts on your responses, if there may have been something you would have done differently, and what other response/ skill would have been helpful/ more appropriate to use. The client is seeking therapy due to “work-related issues”. H = Helper C = Client Client & Helper Responses The Skill You Used Your Comments H1: Hi, so before we begin today, I wanted to go over confidentiality and uh what that means. Do you know what confidentiality is? Closed question I feel like I was a little tense when I said hi. My tone was warm however, I didn’t smile. C1: No, I do not. H2: Okay so confidentiality is, uh, what is said in this room will stay in this room. However, I do have a legal obligation to break confidentiality, if there is mention of child abuse, or elder abuse, um, if it is court ordered, or if you’re going to hurt yourself or somebody else. Does that make sense? Checkout Explaining confidentiality. C2: Yes. Non Verbal: nodding H3: Okay do have any questions about confidentiality? Closed question Seemed appropriate. C3: Uhm no. Non Verbal: shaking head H4: Okay so I just wanted to let you know that if you have any questions or anything like that, uh about confidentiality feel free to ask me, okay? Letting the client know that it is okay to ask me about confidentiality again if any more questions come up. C4: Okay. Non Verbal: nodding
H5: Okay so uh could you tell me what brought you in today? Open question Used this skill to have the client explain why they wanted to come to session. C5: Uh I came in cause I have some work related issues that I’d like to run by you to just to see if you can help uh see what I’m thinking in a different way. H6: Okay, okay um what type of things are going on at work? Open question Asking the client specifically what is going on at work. Seemed like the right direction to take the session. C6: Um well it seems like when I go into work with the experience that I have um that I find myself doing a lot of like cleanup work instead of actually doing the main job that were there for um and it also seems like every time I um come to help like think of a solution for something or like try to find ways to make it easier or actually just even get the job done um it feels like they blow me off and they don’t really tell me or.. um sorry they don’t tell me they kind of blow me off and they don’t really take my comments and they kind of just push me away and care about all the other people instead of me so. Non Verbal: using hand gestures while they speak H7: Okay so it sounds like you’re saying you feel like you’re not being recognized at work and your kind of doing the cleaning stuff and it sounds like you’re not really (client interrupts) Paraphrase Letting the client know I am listening. I shouldn’t have said “kind of”, it minimizes the client’s experience. C7: Yeah. Non Verbal: nodding
H8: Is that right or? checkout Follow up my paraphrase since client interrupted wanted to clarify what I said was right to the client. C8: Yes. H9: Okay, okay, um *pause* what are some ways you would like to be recognized at work? Open question Client expressed they don’t feel heard or valued. This question seemed appropriate to gauge what being recognized looked like for the client. I didn’t mean to pause here I was trying to gather my thoughts. Instead of saying “okay, okay, um” I should have stayed quiet until I was ready to proceed. C9: Um well I seem to feel like I work hard and you know.. I do.. anything I really get asked to do.. I ain’t gonna give nobody any grief, and um I just feel like they should really listen to what I have to say and maybe it’ll be a use to them.. of use to them.. so um it just kind of, like I said it just kind of seems like they don’t really wanna take any advice from me even though I have been doing this for sometime and um I just feel like I’m kind of getting tired of it I mean I appreciate having a job everybody needs a job but I just feel like, you know, I try to put my best foot forward and try to do as much as I can and help out and it just seems like they don’t really care that they don’t really .. like I’m not even on the job is what it seems like so. Non Verbal: hand gestures from client and helper nodding The client didn’t answer the question I proposed instead they reiterated how they aren’t being heard or aren’t cared for by their bosses. H10: It must be difficult to not get recognized for the hard work that putting… Empathic phrase Let’s the client know they are being heard, identifying the emotion underlying their statement. C10: Yeah.. yeah it definitely is um like I said I put my best foot forward every day on the job and it seems like it kind of gets me nowhere, makes me feel like I don’t even.. like there’s no point for me to even be there at this point…. I just wanted to get, to see if maybe you could help me change my
mind, maybe think about, think about it in a different way. Non Verbal: Client using hand gestures, scratches face H11: Okay well um.. what are some things that you enjoy about working where you are at right now? Open question I felt like we were talking about a lot of negatives, so I wanted to shift the attention to some positives that the client feels at the workplace. C11: Um well some of the things I do enjoy working now is um just being out there and I feel like I get, besides the money aspect, I also feel like I also get like good exercise with my health and everything and I like seeing when the jobs get done and how good they look and um yeah..theres.. it’s not really much to it. So it’s like they are the main things, yeah the money is good but I would like to enjoy what I am doing and just cleaning up isn’t my favorite thing to do, I’d rather be hands on and building whatever the job entails so. Non Verbal: client smiles, chuckles uses hand gestures. Helper also smiles and nods along H12: Mhm, yeah so it sounds like you enjoy the physical benefits and you like to, you like the job but your seeking some more responsibility besides just cleaning, do I have that right? Non Verbal: hand gestures, Helper nodding Encourager/ Paraphrase/ checkout When the client was speaking, I was nodding and saying “mhm” to let them know I was listening. While also paraphrasing what they said and using checkout to clarify. C12: Yes, yes. Non Verbal: nodding H13: Okay, okay…. If you could try to be noticed more at your job what would that look like for you? If you could do more? Non Verbal: using hand gestures Open question I didn’t like the way I worded this question, specifically “if you could do more” but I was trying to reword my earlier question “what are some ways you would like to be recognized at work?” C13: I would have to say, I mean I just trying to get more involved in with the guys and asking questioning and like really trying to make them see I want to learn and how do to the things that their doing or actually just help in
general to do the work like I try to kind of push myself in there to kind of see what they’re talking about and try to remember things that they talked about um in case they ever have to go back to whatever they are doing at a later date or whatever at least I’ll have somewhat a decent memory on how things would go, measurements or whatever they need or how they would um.. how they would go about installing whatever just things like that. But then at the end of the day I’m also doing that but also cleaning, cleaning everything up. Making sure everything looks good cause to a customer having everything neat and tidy is a good thing they really keep an eye on that cause you don’t want anybody tripping or falling over stuff so just like I said I kind of just put my best foot forward do anything I can to stay busy. I’m not one of the guys to slack off and kind of sit around and not do anything. Non Verbal: hand gestures, gripping the arm rests H14: Mhm.. yeah so it sounds like you take pride in not slacking off or sitting around? Non Verbal: nodding Restatement encourager I think the restatement encourager is appropriate however, I would have liked to draw more attention to how the cleaning is important to the job. Since earlier the client said it’s not one of their favorite things to do but maybe paraphrasing the importance of cleaning would have helped the client see the value in it as well. C14: Yeah, yes.. it seems like it hasn’t really gotten me anywhere. Non Verbal: nodding H15: Okay *trying to utilize silence* Non Verbal: nodding, adjust siting position Silence I think if I didn’t say anything it would have been appropriate, but I said “okay “so I think the client was expecting me to say something more. I think I realized that, so I shifted uncomfortably. C15: Non Verbal: Client looks down and tightens mouth H16: Could you um give me a specific time when you were on a job and you Open question Asking about a positive time when the client got noticed seemed appropriate since they
were helping but you felt like you did get noticed? mentioned previously that not slacking off didn’t get them anywhere. C16: um yeah I would have to say when I first started out. I was doing cleaning work but there was.. there was one foreman on the job. It was just me and him and he had all this piping to put up in this in this chemical plant. He would always come and ask me to come and help him hold things and drill holes in the wall to put chain falls on and stuff to lift the pipe up in the air that was.. that job went on for about 3 weeks so it wasn’t a very big job but there was a good amount to do in that time and I think that was the only time where I felt like I was actually doing hands on work besides cleaning and that was probably one of my best experiences. H17: You said best experiences? Encourager This led the client to talking more about their “best experiences.” C17: Yeah because I was actually doing the hands on work and I was actually learning. When you’re cleaning up trash and stuff you don’t really learn you’re just kind of picking it up and putting it in the trash. But I would say that’s probably my top experiences. Non verbal: client smiles Helper smiles in return H18: Okay so um it looks like were at time today um so just to sum up our session today it sounds like um work is you enjoy work but you’re looking to be more recognized and have your um your input respected a little bit more you’re looking for instead of just cleaning you’d like to do what the other guys are doing and you enjoy the physical benefits and your check and stuff like that but you really looking to be heard and a part of the team does that sound.. Summarize/ checkout I think this was okay. I didn’t mention the clients “best experiences” or that the customer does value a neat and tidy environment. I feel like I got caught up in some of my wording and was trying to make sure I hit every point. I also did not end my checkout strong I just let it hang between us when I could have been more assertive. “Does that sound right.” C18: Yes, yeah.
H19: Okay, okay so um before we end today how are you feeling about your session? Open question I think this was appropriate to check in with how the client was feeling overall. C19: It was good, I got some things off my chest that I wanted to. Um hopefully we can go on from here and like figure out some stuff out for me. Client seemed to look forward to next meeting. H20: Okay so I’ll see you next week at the same time, okay? Non Verbal: nodding C20: Okay. Non Verbal: nodding H21: Alright have a good weekend. C21: Okay you too.
Student Reflection on Session: The session was acceptable; however, there were hiccups with some of my delivery and nonverbal communication. At the beginning of the session, I think I appeared tense with my “hi.” it was too clipped, and I should have used hello or welcome. Nonverbally, I don’t think I was conveying a warm and welcoming helper. I didn’t smile much throughout the session unless the client did. Throughout the session, my vocal qualities were okay. I do think my visual eye contact went well. Sometimes, I struggle with knowing the “right amount “and shy away from eye contact. I also noticed I didn’t ask the client what exactly he did for work. From the session, you can guess it is a blue-collar type of job however, I think asking the client conveys being interested, so I think I missed the mark with that. I attended well for verbal tracking but may have been questioning repetitively. I was stuck asking the client about being recognized and noticed at work. Maybe I could have explored other avenues, such as strengths and the client’s duties at work besides cleanup. I struggled with listening to the client and being present simultaneously during this session. I was trying to think of what I would say as they talked. I was putting too much pressure on myself to say the “right thing.” This led to pausing, using “um” and stumbling over my words. I felt like I was panicking or overthinking what my next response was going to be. At some moments, you can see me take a deep breath, communicating with myself to breathe and slow down. One thing I did a lot was say okay after the client talked; this was noticeable when I tried using silence. It appears the client is waiting for me to say something else. When the client spoke for a long time, I felt myself getting lost and wasn’t sure if I should have interrupted them with encouragers. After I paraphrased, some of my checkouts weren’t strong or assertive, I let myself trail off instead of taking ownership of my words. I was trailing off because I feared I was wrong and didn’t want to offend or solidify being wrong to the client. I found the summarizing part of the session a little daunting. I wanted to make sure I hit every point we discussed, but it led to me stumbling over some words because I was trying to map out my thought process. Instead of saying okay or jumping into the next sentence, I could try to work on sitting in silence for a moment so I can gather my thoughts and the client can process too. The end of the session went well. I believe checking in with the client was important before we ended the session. It conveyed that I cared about the client’s experience in the session and that the client looked forward to the next session. Overall, I enjoyed the mock session experience of using skills and being hands-on. It helped me realize some of my strengths and what I need to work on.
