Article Description
The research article “Introducing Students of Color to Health Sciences Research: An Evaluation of the Health Disparities Summer Internship Program” explores a program that was created to teach high school students of color about health disparities. The students were invited, over the course of several years, to participate in the study of various health disparities research in universities. The majority of the students selected for this program were Black females who were juniors or seniors in high school. The research outreach program lasted for approximately 4 weeks during the summer and was created with the hope and intention of increasing the number of people of color who ultimately enter into the field of treating health disparities. The study aimed to measure whether or not this particular type of internship could affect the potential entry of people of color into positions within this particular industry. The idea of increasing knowledge and exposure to such particular content, while students are at a stage in life where they are developing interests and long-term goals, seems like it would have a positive correlation.
Between the years of 2012 and 2015, students who participated in the Health Disparities Summer Internship Program were taught about various medical topics relating to the community and participation in the medical care system. Students learned about medical policy and different advocacy initiatives, as well. The students were prompted to complete research projects that asked them to create solutions to existing policy-related medical issues. Amid the process of students completing these research projects, they attended courses through the internship that provided explicit education on different issues surrounding racial discrimination in healthcare and community participation in health care.
The study examines the internship programs from Emory University and the University of Alabama as well. According to the article, after the high school interns completed their internships at Emory, 76% of the participants felt that a career in science or medicine would be “right for them.” The students who participated in these interviews, after completing exit surveys, generally said that the internships helped to expose them to careers and knowledge that they would not have been exposed to without the internship (McClean, et al 2018). Many students stated that they felt their skills in critical thinking were sharpened or refined through their participation in medical-related research. The internship participants felt that they learned a great deal about their own health and well-being through the instructional aspects of the internships. Many students who participated in the internship program also stated that they wanted to begin serving as advocates for health within their own communities.
Purpose/Justification of the Article
This article does an excellent job of connecting the idea that high school internships can boost the levels of success for students who enter college or the workforce after exiting high school. The very specific intentions behind the internship program highlighted in this study actually demonstrate a positive result. Students who completed a summer internship in medical science research exited the internship with the intention of shifting their academic focal points to science or medical related fields. This is a powerful way to bridge racial divides in STEM careers, as well. The study essentially targeted students of color to participate in the medical research, and these students were highly influenced by the time that they spent learning about community based health research.
Interpretation
Ideally, in a school setting, high schools will offer course credit for participation in internships. There have to be agencies or oversight entities that could manage the assignment and crediting of students with work hours towards an internship. Students who are striving for higher educational endeavors can complete related internships that will either prepare them for the rigor of academia or that can drive their interest in a particular subject area, such as medical science research. Students who are considering entering directly into the workforce after high school can benefit from other sorts of internships. For example, in the vein of discussing STEM careers for minorities, students who are exiting high school could intern at a medical laboratory and learn to draw and read blood samples. Internships in the STEM subject areas could potentially prepare students for employment immediately after graduating from high school. This issue is extremely important because many minority students in the United States end up exiting high school with no practical skills to apply to a job. Many of these students do not have access or exposure to the variety of jobs that are available to them. Many of these students do not have a clear understanding of how to attain such jobs either. A series of high school internships could truly change the overall trajectory of a child and his/her family’s lives.
The methods of the study conducted involved assessing students’ knowledge and interests of academic medical knowledge and community-based health care participation. The interns were surveyed and assessed at the end of their 4-week internships. Students demonstrated significant increases in the content-knowledge upon which they were assessed. The interns were much more deeply able to understand what social determinants of health are, and why community participation in the medical system is essential, particularly for people of color.
The article’s findings demonstrate that there is a positive relationship between exposing high school students to content-specific industry-based jobs. The students were provided with direct instruction, research assignments, and research coaching throughout their participation in the internship. They were presented with exit surveys, which determined a great deal of their attitudes about the internship and its impact on their general interests. The results of the surveys demonstrated overall positive responses about the internship, itself, and medical science research.
A criticism I determined after reading through this article was that I would have been interested to see some longitudinal data on these students. How many of them actually took an additional science or medical-related course in high school after participating in the internship? How many students actually entered into a higher education program that involves science after completing the internship? How many students entered the workforce after high school and selected to work in science or medical-related jobs? The information presented from the exit surveys truly indicates an ignited interest in STEM related subjects, but in order to adequately measure its effectiveness, the previously mentioned entry rates need to be examined.
I would like to see the high school or district I work for incorporate internships for our students. By offering course credit for internship hours completed, the school could easily structure a way for students to truly benefit from the experiences that we, educators, subject them to while they are within our care. By exposing students to the workforce and by equipping them with practical, marketable skills, they will be better situated to enter the workforce and become productive members of society. People of color can also become better represented in various industries if they are to receive the opportunities to learn more about these industries while they are juniors or seniors in high school.
