Week 5: Comparative Social Problem First Draft
Intercultural social problems paper: Part I, a culture known to you
Using the topic from your proposal, use the information from the textbook and material covered in class to make the argument that the issue you have chosen is a social problem.
Identify the claims being made, the groups that are making the claims, and how these claims makers are attempting to influence social policies.
Ensure you discuss:
• Why this topic fits the definition of a social problem.
• The extent of this social problem in your native culture.
• The various social groups affected by this social problem in your native culture.
• The impact of this social problem on your native culture.
• The policies or processes that have been proposed or implemented to solve this social problem in your native culture. Evaluate their effectiveness. (Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of proposed or implemented policy.)
• Intercultural competence: How the history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices of your native culture influence this issue.
• Intercultural competence: Your cultural self-awareness, an appropriate cultural worldview framework, empathy, elements of appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication, empathy, curiosity, and openness relative to this social problem.
You must include at least 4 sources for the first paper, ideally peer-reviewed journal articles. See: http://library.webster.edu/guides/quickscholart.html
If the source from your proposal was approved, you may include that in the four required for this assignment. You may include your textbook as one source. You may include one editorial-style source, such as a newspaper article or report from a governmental or non-governmental agency or think tank. Avoid Wikipedia and blogs.
Sources should be presented at the end and properly cited using your preferred citation style, but the citation style must remain consistent (this means that you can’t just copy/paste and end up with one article using APA style and another using MLA). If you don’t already know a citation style, use APA: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.htmlLinks to an external site.
Your paper must be typed, 1” margins, a standard font (preferably Times New Roman), 12 point, approximately 4-5 pages of text, excluding the sources.
