3. List and discuss any three of the six questions the text presents to guide theoretical analysis.
Requirements: 3-4 PAGES
GUIDE FOR PREPARATION OF WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS
1. Spend time organizing your answers.
a. Number each question properly; do not assume I can tell the
difference between one answer and another.
b. Answer two-and only two-questions per assignment.
2. Develop your answers. You are not writing a term paper, but your work
should still be focused and complete.
a. You need not write five pages per answer, but several paragraphs
(1.5-2 pages per question; 3-4 pages each week) is not unreasonable.
b. Develop your own thoughts with chosen examples and stating your
opinion at every opportunity.
c. In short, take ownership of your answers in creating an argument and
point of view. Go beyond simple restatement of the text or other
sources that you may consult: agree, disagree, critique the reading
as you make your own argument-do not be afraid to use the pronoun I!
3. Always practice intellectual integrity.
a. If you have not already done so, read the plagiarism statement in
the syllabus.
b. Be careful not to just copy from the text or other source.
Use your own words and thoughts as much as possible.
Occasionally quote with ” ” for exact words and appropriate
citation of page numbers from the source placed in your answer.
Place a bibliographic reference list at the end of your answers in
each assignment (include in this reference list the text and any
other material cited; if you consult other sources but do not quote
directly, include these citations in the list; you are encouraged
but not required to consult other references outside the text. See
c. through g. below for more specific instructions.
c. Provide an appropriate bibliographic citation for the text in the
above reference list-whether you directly quote from it or not. By
doing this you guard against unconscious plagiarism.
d. In the body of your answers cite any relevant page numbers of the
text.
e. While you properly list the text as a reference, you need to also
carefully develop the answer with your own thoughts (examples and
opinions are always useful): the answer should not be only a string
of ideas referenced to the text author.
f. Do not cite references in the answers just because they are
contained in the reading: the author has consulted/read those, but
you have not. Best practice is to cite only references you have
specifically consulted.
g. Every writer, no matter how experienced, must guard against
plagiarism in its many forms. In the world of the internet,
intellectual integrity is indeed difficult to maintain, but it
should never be ignored, consciously violated, nor considered
“quaint” and out-of-date.
4. You MUST include references for your answers in the Reading Assignments. At the very least you should cite the specific textbook chapter reading in APA format, as well as any other sources you cite. If short quotes are used in your answers, they should have ” ” and relevant page numbers for the sources.
Examples:
Cite the SPECIFIC READING from the text that deals with your answer (NOT just a general reference for the entire textbook.

In the body of your answers cite any relevant page numbers of the text. While you properly list the text reading as a reference, you need to also carefully develop the answer with your own thoughts (examples and opinions are always useful): the answer should not be only a string of ideas referenced to the text author. Good Luck!!
Following is a sample question/answer; the referencing procedures outlined above are followed.
Question #1:
Discuss the impact of Howard S. Becker’s reinterpretation of labeling theory as interactionism. Include a brief description of “deviance demystification”
in your answer,
A decade after the original publication of Outsiders, in an enlarged edition, Becker (1963/73) addressed the impact of labeling theory on deviance studies. He explicitly places the theory in an interactionist frame of deviance-as-collective-action: deviance is not focused narrowly on the label, but is located in the broader scenario through which meaning-construction occurs. This interactionist frame re-emphasizes the signification irony of deviance-generation and its overlap with that of conformity. Thus, Becker (1963/73:184) speaks of “potentially” deviant behavior as well as that which is successfully labeled; furthermore, definitions of deviance and conformity are a product of the same process of collective action-contested dramas over time, space, and cultural terrain.
An interactional approach demystifies deviance and questions “the monopoly on the truth and the ‘whole story’ claimed by those in positions of power and authority” (Becker 1963/73:207). It is this story-the social construction of stigmatization-which the deviantization process characterizes; its generation of meaning is complex, open-ended, tentative and political. The interactionist approach captures meaning-creation in its widest application, as collective action “based upon social rules, either informal norms or law” (Dotter 2004:102). Thus the process of deviance-definition is natural and interactional; all of its aspects are open to study, not to premature closure, partisan control, nor even careless oversight.

FORMAT REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
1. American Psychological Association (APA) Style
2. a. Be sure to provide the COMPLETE BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION in APA STYLE, INCLUDING ELECTRONIC INDENTIFICATION (e.g., DOI or URL if appropriate).
b. For each entry, include a 2-3 paragraph summary of the entry’s main points and/or your overall evaluation of the reference. The summary should be in your own words and not simply copied from the entry abstract or some other source; each citation summary should be written in complete sentences, typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins all around, 10-point font (10 entries total, 20 points per entry, submitted via Canvas no later than TUESDAY,
November 28 by 11:55pm).
c. ALL bibliographic entries should be from scholarly journals or book chapters (either online or hard copy; NO WIKIPEDIA CITATIONS). It is recommended that you consult electronic resources such as JSTOR, Google Scholar, and Google Books for the ten entries. If an article is behind a pay site, you may still use it without reading the entire complete source. Be sure to include the complete bibliographic citation and use the available abstract for your annotation. DO NOT COPY THE ABSTRACT WORD-FOR-WORD: Paraphrase it and put it in your own words.
d. The 10 entries should generally cover the theories/crime types covered in text. In other words, you should not turn in 10 citations on a single theory or type of crime; with flexibility you can draw from a variety of crime types/theories. There may be some repetition of content in your choices of chapters/articles, but the purpose is to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the information in the process of answering the weekly discussion questions. It is recommended that you search for articles while reading each chapter week-by-week, and choose references that will add to your knowledge of the theories and aid in answering the discussion questions.
e. It will be easiest for you to research and choose your entries via electronic searches, but you may also search hard copy sources in a library. I do not need nor want hard copy articles of your sources, but you must supply complete bibliographic citations per a and b above.
f. The entries should be organized as a list alphabetized by author’s last name per APA Style. The title should read ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR SYSTEMS. This annotated bibliography should be typed (double-spaced, one-inch margins all around) and submitted to me via Canvas no later than TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28 by 11:55pm.
g. The Annotated Bibliography should be an original composition, not recycled from another class. Additionally, chapters from textbook should not be used as references in the bibliography. If you have any questions, PLEASE CONTACT ME.
