Aesthetic Appreciation Report
Visual merchandising is a creative and aesthetic work. Because visual merchandisers use aesthetic judgements in creating an effective and visually pleasing display, it is important to develop a sense of aesthetic taste and be able to evaluate the aesthetic properties of an object. In this module, you will practice perceiving an object through the lenses of various ways of knowing, seeing and feeling (Greene, 2001).
This assignment invites you to engage with art in deep and thoughtful way. Please follow the steps and answer the questions.
Watch the following videos and complete the report.

1. Explore art pieces from a museum in the list included in the Module (see assignment instructions in the module). Identify an art piece that you find aesthetically appealing. Spend enough time to really observe and be immersed in the art piece.

2. Describe your feelings and emotional reactions such as delight, pleasure, joy, from exposing yourself to the aesthetic of the art. Be free in your expression and be honest. You do not need to rationalize your aesthetic experiences at this stage. Really focus on your internal feelings, emotions, and even physical sensations.

3. Analyze the art piece. Describe the piece of art in terms of its subject matter. Use neutral terms. Discuss the art using the basic elements of art and design (i.e., line, color, space, light, shape).

In the next section, you are going to ponder the following: Does the value of the art come from what is put into the art object, by the person who created it? Or does its value depend on the experience that it triggers in the audience?
4. Some argue that what makes something art is the aesthetic emotion that is brings out in the audience. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
[Write your response here]
5. Other people (e.g., Leo Tolstoy) understood art primarily in terms of the artist, as an expression of the ineffable emotions of the person who created it. An artist creates as a way of communicating feelings to other people – oftentimes, feelings that can’t be expressed in mere words. By looking at the art, what feelings do you think the artist wanted to communicate to other people?

6. Some thinkers argue that the intention of the artist is really important – that the artist must want to evoke some valuable emotion in the audience for their work to be considered art. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
[Write your response here]
7. Research the artist and the period in which it was created. Research societal and
cultural environments, including available technology and the artists’ ethnicity, race and gender.
[Write your response here]
8. Try to identify the purpose of the work. What do you think the artist was trying to say with the work? Why did he/she/they create the work? What is the overall meaning of the work?
[Write your response here]
9. After researching the art and the meaning of it, how your feelings and judgments of the art have changed? Explain.
[Write your response here]
10. [Closing] Share your thoughts on how the act of human creative expression impacts the human society and the art is impacted by the culture and society in which it was created.
[Write your response here]
11. You may also share your thoughts on how you believe human creative expression can impact personal and social issues we deal with today (optional).
