Reply to Halley The last ethical choice that I had to make was last night when I had three different events at the same time. First, I told my friends I would be at an event at church. Then, I ordered a new iPhone, but it came in not working. So, I needed to go to an Apple store that is an hour’s drive away from where I live. Lastly, my dad asked me to dinner since my grandparents came to town when they lived out of state. Specifically, I had to decide what event was more important to me at the moment. I decided that I needed to get my new phone replaced because I could not do much without a phone. I resolved the situation by apologizing to my friends and family and explaining my situation. They all completely understood as they know how important it is to have a phone and that it is our lifeline. I am not a school counselor yet and so I could not relate to having to make a ethical decision in a school setting. This situation is similar in comparison to the model from the chapter by defining the problem, applying moral principles, determining a potential course of action, evaluating the selected action, consulting, and implementing the course of action. This situation was dissimilar from the model from the chapter by not needing to apply the ASCA Ethical Standards and the law, considering the student’s developmental levels, and considering the rights of minors and parents. These steps would be used in a school counselor’s ethical choice when working with students. In addition, a school counselor would need to professionally document the ethical decision-making model. According to the text by Dollarhide, C. T., and Saginak, K. A., “This means that if you are ever required to explain your decision to parents, school administrators, or legal representatives, you have documentation that verifies that you followed a best-practice procedure that is supported by others in your profession and your profession’s ethical standards”. I did not have to document anything from my ethical choice because it was outside of a school setting and not needed.

Reply To Kathrin- As a family resource coordinator, I have worked with several families in crisis. There have been several instances where I have helped a family with groceries, clothing, or utility bills without the knowledge of the student. I have a special access door to my office that allows parents and students an opportunity to enter the family resource center without drawing attention from the student population. The heartbeat of my job is confidentiality. If families feel that they cannot trust me, they may not reach out to receive assistance with basic needs for their student.
The most recent ethical dilemma occurred this past week. One of the students had been absent since the first day of school. On her fifth day of absence, I grew concerned and reached out to the family. The mother told me that she had just called the registrar and was pulling her children out to homeschool them due to an argument with one of the staff members at the middle school. My heart sank because this is a family that I help with lots of different resources. This family is an ESL family and has several members with cognitive disabilities. Communication is difficult, but I have been able to develop a relationship with the family. I informed them that I would not be able to help them with resources if they were not in our school district. After our conversation, the mother decided to re-enroll her children to receive academic and basic need support. When our registrar found out that the children were coming back to school, she became elated and asked me to share how I convinced them to come back. While I wanted to celebrate with my colleague, I wanted to respect the family and not disclose any portion of the conversation I had with the family. My colleague understood and was grateful for my desire to keep confidentiality. We were still able to celebrate a win with reconnecting with the family.
The writers of our textbook share, “Counselors are often tempted to share too much information in their desire to help students be successful, care must be taken to obtain the student’s permission before revealing detailed information to all school colleagues, including administrators (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2017) I work in a small school district where it feels that everyone knows everybody. I also believe that it is important that confidentiality is maintained with students, families, and community members.
