Submit your sources for Assignment 1
Submit your sources for Assignment 1. Save each one as a separate .PDF with a file name in this format: “Author’s last name_Title of Document” (can be a short version of the title).
In the PDF of each source, please make sure to include the following:
- Title page of the source
- Copyright page of the source
- Each page from the source you used, underlining or highlighting the words, ideas, and information you used from the page. Please DO NOT SUBMIT A WHOLE BOOK OR ARTICLE–only submit the pages you used.
For Assignment 1, make absolutely sure your sources are articles. For Assignments 2-4 you may use primary sources and monographs (history books). You may not use book reviews or articles of dubious origins not found through the library database. When describing your sources, try to identify the author’s argument. All academic sources are argumentative (such is the nature of academia), and a major part of this research paper will involve responding to these arguments. You are not writing an informational report on a topic. Instead, you are responding to an existing historical debate. We will discuss this in greater detail in the coming weeks. You also need to include an MLA-style Works Cited page at the end of Assignment 1. Yu can find information on how to format essays and the Works Cited page on the MLA Template Paper.
1. Source Submission: The source submission is a compilation of pdf screenshots for each source that you use. Assignment 1 requires 4 sources, so you will need to create 4 pdfs. The pdfs should consist of screenshots of the following:
a. Each page that you cited in the writing assignment. If you quoted or paraphrased a passage in a source, there should be a screenshot of the page that you quoted or paraphrased.
b. The title page and copyright page. (These aren’t always available for articles or primary sources. If you can’t find them then you may skip this part.)
c. Each pdf should be annotated—that is, there should be highlighting/notes on the screenshot that coincides with the parts of the source that you quoted or paraphrased.
Select these when looking for secondary sources
Every writing assignment in MMW13 requires a source submission. The goal of this activity is to help you be organized in the way that you gather information. These are essential skills for any research project! Ideally, someone should be able to look at any citation in your essay and cross-reference it with your source submission pdfs. How do you create and annotate/highlight pdfs? There are a few different ways to do this depending on if you’re using Windows, Mac, Android, iOS or a Chromebook. Look through this slideshow for instructions on how to create screenshots and edit pdfs. If you check the Research and Writing Resources module on Canvas, you will find a slideshow containing information on how to create, edit, and annotate pdfs using a mobile app called Camscanner. Create 4 separate pdfs (1 for each article.) Turn these in as attachments in the Week 3 Source Submission link.
2. Search Strategies for Library Resources Tutorial: You can find the link to this on the Week 3 Canvas module. It will take you to an external website containing a tutorial on using the library search engine. The tutorial will teach you how to use search terms more effectively. These will come in handy when you are looking for sources throughout the quarter.
Follow the tutorial’s instructions. It should send you a confirmation email after you finish. (If you don’t receive a confirmation email, please contact the library.) Take a screenshot of the confirmation email and upload it to the Search Strategies for Library Resources Tutorial section of the Week 3 Canvas module.
**All three parts of the assignment must be completed in order to receive credit!**
