GUIDE TO WRITING REACTION PAPERS
Reaction papers are designed to stimulate critical thought about a variety of foreign policy issues. You are being required to write one (1) Reaction Paper (3 pages, typed). Throughout this semester you will be required to read the New York Times. You are to select an article or op-ed piece related to international relations. Write a paper describing your reaction to the readings.
DIRECTIONS: Reaction papers consist of two relatively equal parts: a summary and a critical analysis. The summary consists of restating the article’s central points as concisely as possible. In addition to summarizing, this part of the paper should include the answers to the following questions:
1. What is the main point (inform, convince, etc.) of the article?
2. What conclusions does the author draw?
3. What evidence does the author offer to support the story? (Evidence can be historical, biographical, or statistical). Determine and explain: Who or what is the source of author’s information?
The critical analysis is the most important part of the reaction paper. When critically analyzing an article you should think about following questions:
1. Were you convinced by the author’s argument? Why or why not?
2. Is the argument logical? Is it consistent or does one part of it contradict another?
3. Does the argument support the thesis or might I use the same argument and come to a different conclusion?
4. How does this relate to the class?
5. What have I learned in class that helps me understand and/or take issue with the story?
REMEMBER: All arguments have weaknesses and it is up to you, the critical analyst, to find them. Critical thinking is a valuable skill that takes time, patience and diligence to develop. These reaction papers are an important first-step in evaluating current international issues and events.
GRADING: Refer to the rubric attached hereto.
The Reaction Paper will be graded on style and grammar, as well as content. Papers that are well-written and include a solid summary and critique on each position could receive full points. Papers that are well-written but miss a key element in the summary or critique will receive less points. Papers that have several grammatical errors or style problems or miss the thesis or do not present a substantive critique will receive even less points.
