39423Forum Information and Guidelines:
Please remember that though the forums are the last written assignments of the term, Washington Irving is our first notable writer of fiction. Technically, these two stories are the first of the module when considering chronology.
Read “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Devil and Tom Walker” as assigned in Modules. Notice that this forum is structured differently from the unit 1 forums. The guidelines follow.
Each student must answer just ONE original question. There is one question per student in this forum. Please do not write an original response to more than one question. If you do so, you will take question away from your classmates. Again, the directions are to answer one original question for the entire forum, not one per thread.
Questions are answered on a first-come/first-served basis.
No more than one student may answer a question. After one student has answered a question, that question is off limits. You are welcome to add your ideas to a post of another student, but you must answer your own individual question.
You can go to the TEXT ONLY. For better or for worse, I ask that you offer your own ideas about your question, NOT analysis found from the Internet.
I ask that you respond thoroughly with 7+ sentences. Also, while you may quote from the text, your post must be primarily expressed in your own words. The quote will not count as part of your minimum length requirement.
You will not have the capability to create a new thread; you must post as a reply to the starter thread. However, I do ask that you give the topic of your post in your reply so that your classmates will know what question you have answered. An example would be to change the subject line from “RE: Irving’s Two Tales” to “Irving’s View of Marriage.” A change like that lets students know what questions in the thread have been taken. CREATING A NEW SUBJECT LINE IS AN IMPORTANT STEP THAT WILL HELP STUDENTS WHO RESPOND AFTER YOU.
After posting your original response, read other postings and post a thoughtful response to at least one classmate. Build upon your classmate’s post by providing additional details, ideas, and perspectives. Notice the specificity with which you should respond.
Forum Grading:
To receive full credit, you must post two times. I would love to see a good discussion with interaction between students. I will consider any responses you give to your classmates’ posts; however, your primary grade will come from your answer to your chosen question.
Forum Information and Guidelines:
Excerpts from The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave are required reading, as are the Whitman poems. You will see questions and quotes from these works at test time, and I hope that you will provide each other with solid notes through this forum.
This forum requires three posts:
All students must share personal responses in the “Stand-out Lines – ‘There Was a Child Went Forth’ ” thread.
Students will then write ONE original post following the guidelines below.
Students will add at least one thoughtful response to a classmate. I like when you encourage your classmates, but avoid pep talk posts vs. posts that add solid thoughts to the forum.
