Post a comparison of the termination process between treatment groups and family sessions
TERMINATION WITH FAMILIES AND GROUPS
Wk9
Termination can bring strong emotional reactions, especially for groups who have been able to achieve a high level of trust, respect, and alliance among members. They may have opened up to reveal personal details or intimacies, only to now say goodbye. To successfully terminate, social workers must apply skills to bring closure, acknowledge and celebrate accomplishments, and refer members to additional therapy or services if needed. Termination, too, can affect families who have begun to rely on a social worker’s support in communication and conflict resolution.
In this Discussion, you examine the process and techniques used in terminating with groups and with families.
TO PREPARE
• Review the Learning Resources on termination and evaluation.
• Imagine that you are working with a treatment group and with a family. Consider how you would evaluate readiness for termination in both of these circumstances.
• Also consider how you would terminate with the treatment group and with the family, and how these processes may compare.
BY DAY 3
Post a comparison of the termination process between treatment groups and family sessions. Explain how you would evaluate readiness to terminate group and family treatment, identifying similarities and differences between the evaluation of the two types of treatment. Describe the techniques you would use to terminate a treatment group and how these may be the same or different than the techniques you would use to terminate a family intervention.
