Unfortunately violence is an incumbent thread within all urban citiesconsisting of medium and large sized populations . Boston has seen a changespecifically relating to the participants that make up this violence. Juveniles havereclassified innocence and begun to change the dynamic of violent crime. This study willanalyze the relationship of juveniles within a particular age range to gang activity,specific sections of the city, the impact within Boston Public Schools, social and culturalinfluences. This will question the community role in juvenile crime and the accountabilityof the media who misconstrue its impact on particular communities. This study will bemeasured through the use of interaction analysis which will conclude transparencypertaining to the roots of this problem. The study’s goal will be to provide informativeinformation to increase accountability among social leaders, academic members andcommunity stakeholders. This will in turn create the opportunity to decrease juvenilecrime through active transparency and awareness in an effort to directly deter andintercept future crime.Review of LiteratureIn 1899 the first juvenile court was founded in Chicago which identified juvenilesas individuals aged eight and older. Now according to Massachusetts General Law,juveniles are classified between the ages of 12 and 18. According to Schwarz (2009)this is considered a critical time for juveniles due to their mental, social and emotional
development. As these adolescents get older their brain experiences significantchanges, these changes affect their behavior which can last long into their adulthood.Schwarz (2009) further states due to the developing juvenile brain they are notablyreceptive to positive influences, pertaining to social and emotional learning. Althoughbecoming susceptible to depression which leads to more risky and thrill seekingbehavior. Many community stakeholders have been tasked with the protection anddirection of their children. Although the strict household rules, better school tuitionoutside their neighborhoods may not be the solution they hoped it would be. Theexternal influences that children and adolescents are exposed to create the internalbattle of parental structure and the social pressure to fit in. This begins with the BostonPublic School System. BPS has proposed a comprehensive behavioral health model in2016 to focus on the social, emotional and behavioral needs of BPS students. Thisproposal includes a multitiered system that teaches and monitors students learning andbehavior (Shella, 2016). Since then there has been an increase of safety incidents thathave posed a risk to school staff and students. Such events range from physical fightson school property, presence of illegal weapons, school shootings and physical assaultson school staff by students. This literature review will continue to focus on theprogression of internal boston public school influence on truancy and safety and itsimpact on its students behavior. This behavior will then be analyzed based on theneighborhood the school is in and the external influences in that neighborhood inrelation to the evolution of gang activity and violent crime.
