One difference between wound debridement and wound repair is that wound debridement is removing tissue. It is also reported by how deep a single wound scrubbing went. If there are multiple wounds, you add up the ones that are of the same depth. If different depths, do not combine. With wound repair there are 3 ways for them to be classified, simple, intermediate, and complex. Wound repair is a surgical procedure that requires sutures, staples or tissue adhesive.
For coding wound debridement, you have to add all the SAME depths together. If you have different amounts of depths, you do not combine the amounts.
For coding wound repair or closure there are different levels. The first is a single repair which is where the upper most layer of skin needs repairing. Local anesthetics are not reported separately. The second is intermediate repair. The intermediate repair includes the first layer of skin needing repair along with a deeper layer of skin that is not muscle. The last is complex repair. Complex repair involves repairing the intermediate level along with exposure of bone, or tendons, muscles, etc. Complex repair does not include benign or malignant lesions either.
