THINKING THROUGH SOURCES OF WAYS OF THE WORLD source 10.4B How Jerusalem Was Captured by Saladin | 1187 Visual Source Analysis
Explain the “scene” – what is happening, where and when the visual source was created, and by whom- what impact might the creator’s political, religious, or cultural beliefs may have been on the source, in other words, what might have influenced the person/s to create the visual in the first place-who is intended audience? Given the historical context and subject of the visual source, what do you think the artist is trying to say (what does the image /visual source mean based on its historical context), and what do you think is the intended audience-what message, does it convey? If your visual source relates to the excerpt from a primary historical document, explain how? You can corroborate and compare your observations to one in the textbook in terms of what text say about the “scene “depicted in the source you analyzed so explain what do you see in the visual source so summarize the scene it depicts. In other words, what do you see in the visual source you have chosen to analyze? Situate your “visual source” within the historical context (what place does it have in history). Ask yourself, what you need to know about the time period in order to understand this visual source? How the source was received in its time, and provide larger historical context that relates to “the source” -framing of the larger social, cultural, political, or economic contexts of the time-do you think it is a single work or part of a larger movement? What does the textbook or booklet say about the event/s depicted in the visual source you have chosen to analyze –history behind the visual source -what was happening during that time in history that sparked the creation of visual source?
Integrate evidences that led you to your assessment and conclusions about your chosen visual primary source -support them by referring to specific elements of the visual source. Your arguments should focus on the source and the message it conveys. All evidence for your arguments should come from the source but the analysis should come from you. An excellent essay would be the one that provides an analysis in a way that conveys a deeper meaning than one gets from simply observing the source (it is more about historical analysis than aesthetic art analysis). The purpose of this assignment is for you to focus on a single primary historical visual source in detail, thinking not only about how it creates the meaning, but also about how it relates to the history in which it was produced (be able to make those connections). You should demonstrate the ability in reflecting upon, evaluating, and interpreting historical evidence to make a logical argument that is well supported by evidence and correct use of citation style/format.
