List the musical groups and musical activities from the list above (and any additional activities not listed above) in which you were personally involved throughout your years of schooling.
make replies to offer feedback to at least three other postings contributed by your colleagues, possibly commenting on your agreement/disagreement with their views (and why!), similarities/differences between your musical backgrounds, arguments supporting your own contrary views, posing questions to further clarify/investigate their answers, etc. Ultimately, your comments should be thought provoking, inquisitive, comparative, etc., and not just “I agree with what you said.” This discussion is intended to be a “free form” and open-ended interaction.
How was it used? What were its influences, purposes, etc.?
The music was in the background the whole day; I think it was meant to serve as pump-up music for all of the competing athletes
In/at what kind of place did you make your observation?
It’s not a place, but I was on hold for a long time on the phone the other day and had to listen to a lot of hold music
What kind of music was used?
It was instrumental flute music
How was it used? What were its influences, purposes, etc.?
To let customers know that they were still on the line and hadn’t been hung up on while they were on the phone
List the musical groups and musical activities from the list above (and any additional activities not listed above) in which you were personally involved throughout your years of schooling.
I was involved in a lot of music growing up; I took general music, I was in choir, concert band, orchestra, marching band, pep band, show choir, musicals, and jazz band.
Overall, in a generalized sense, why is music important or not important?
Music is important because it makes people feel things and helps us connect with other people
How does music affect us even if we do not use it in a career?
I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t ever listen to music or watch movies and tv shows that use music; it’s not really possible to not have music in your life at all
What is the value of music education?
Music is everywhere, so obviously knowing a little bit about how it works is good for all of us, and there have also been a lot of studies that show the benefits of music for mental health and learning, so music education is valuable both on its own and for the ways it can benefit learning in other areas.
5. Should music be offered as a part of the academic program in K-12 schools for those who wish to participate? Why or why not?
I definitely think it’s important to have music opportunities in school; I participated in a lot and they were really important to my high school experience. Music learning contributes to other learning, and working with a group to create music helps kids to make friends and develop social skills.
6. Should music be required or elective in K-12 schools? Why or why not?
I agree with the way we currently do music in most K-12 schools, with music being required in elementary school and offered as an elective for middle schoolers and high schoolers, because I think music is something that it’s important for everyone to be exposed to but I don’t think everyone needs to have the same level of understanding as they do for core subjects.
7. How do you feel about the UNIFI (general education program) course requirements that you have to take at the college level (referring to all UNIFI courses, not just this music class), especially the ones that do not necessarily relate to your career choice?
I think it’s important to have general education requirements, even if I don’t always like taking them, because it benefits us more to know a little bit about a lot of different things than to have a completely one-track education.
8. What is your career choice? What is one way in which music is used, or might be incorporated in your work place setting? (Even if you are undecided on a career, pick one that you might be interested in to answer this question.)
I’m an English teaching major, and I think music can be super helpful in that area because lyrics are the major way that most kids today encounter poetry and analyzing song lyrics is a good gateway to analyzing poetry.
