“Learning to Serve: The Language and Literacy of Food Service Workers” by Tony Mirabelli
“Coaches Can Read, Too: An Ethnographic Study of a Football Coaching Discourse Community” by Sean Branick
Both of these articles demonstrate ways to explore questions related to a specific discourse community, and how to communicate observations/analysis about these communities. One (Mirabelli) is from a more “seasoned” researcher; the other (Branick) was written by a student. Both serve as useful examples of how to explore a focused idea related to a particular discourse community.
Once you’ve read the essays by Tony Mirabelli and Sean Branick, add your observations/analysis regarding each essay for each of the categories below. After you’ve finished, post a link to your completed handout in your course journal.
Category 1: Structure
Note how each of the essays approaches the structure of their essays. Then address at least a few of the following items:
What do you find helpful? What is confusing?
What do they have in common, and where do you see differences?

Compare/contrast the approach each author uses to start off their essays. What grabs you? What is each author trying to accomplish in their opening paragraphs? Which do you find more effective, and why?

What is the topic of each essay? (Not just the general topic, but the specific research focus/question the author is exploring)
What sentence/group of sentences would you identify as the thesis of each essay? Does the evidence/discussion provided in the essay support these ideas? Why or why not?

Category 4: Using evidence
What kind of evidence (research) does each author use to illustrate and support their ideas? Provide a few examples for each. What kind of evidence do you find most persuasive? Where are you left wanting more info?

Look at the conclusion sections for each essay. What is the author trying to accomplish in each case? What issues/ideas do they focus on here, and how do these ideas connect to/support their thesis? What final thoughts/questions does the author leave the reader thinking about?

Category 6: Genres
What genre(s) does each author discuss/analyze in their essay? Do these genres seem like the best choices for their particular discourse communities? Why or why not? Are there any genre examples that you don’t find persuasive or relevant? Explain.

Discuss each author’s choice of discourse community. What do you find interesting, useful, surprising, unpersuasive, or irrelevant? (Feel free to add any additional ideas about the communities here as well)
