In this audio submission, you will interview *a fellow science student* and have them tell a story that relates to the question: “What is your most mind-blowing scientific fact, and why?” The goal of this interview is to bring your subject your profiled colleague, and their favourite scientific factto life for the listener. Your editing should enable listeners to feel that they “know” the person talking and can hear their enthusiasm for the scientific fact so much that they too get excited by the fact. This audio submission should demonstrate your ability to edit content carefully into a short but well-organized piece of science communication. Ultimately, you should strive to connect the speaker with the listener in a way that conveys enthusiasm for the topic.
Much good science communication (and life!) is about making sure that you know how to ask good questions, not simply about knowing the answer. The point of this exercise is two-fold:
To have your interviewee tell a story about themselves
To communicate a scientific fact to a general audience
When interviewing, in order to get good audio footage, make sure you understand the difference between open-ended questions (which require more thought) and closed-ended questions (which elicit a simple one-word answer), and how the first kind makes for better interviews. Since you are asking someone to “set the stage” for the coolest scientific fact they know, choose some prompts that you will ask as interview questions. Hit record, and interview your partner on the chosen topic. Aim to have 5-7 minutes of raw audio footage.

Conflict – Conflict add suspense or tension to stories. It can be internal – for example, someone having a hard time making a decision. Or it can be external, such as an obstacle in the way of someone reaching her goal.
Dramatic arc or plot – Good stories have a clear beginning, middle and end. One or many characters are often on a kind of emotional or physical journey, where the end is usually not the same as the beginning.
Developed characters – These are characters with some of kind of backstory, personality or details that make them seem real.
Setting – Many stories take us places we can’t go ourselves. Maybe that’s just inside a home, or maybe it’s behind the scenes of an event.
Reflection – What did the interviewee learn from their experiences?
Great sounds – This is audio, after all! Is the character’s voice interesting? What can you tell about them from their voice? Were there other interesting sounds? How did the character make you feel? Interested? Uncomfortable?
