1. Go on any social media platform and investigate your feed/timeline/fyp with a critical eye, searching for ambiguity.
2. Locate an ambiguous word or phrase in a post or video and share or describe the ambiguity.
You could provide a link, quote the poster, or simply set the scene using your own language. Please keep what you share appropriate for a professional context.
3. Then, provide at least one paragraph of analysis, describing why this example is ambiguous.
You may rely on the following questions for your analysis:
How could your example be interpreted in multiple ways, or have many different meanings?
How do various interpretations of a word or phrase change the meaning of the example?
How would you define the word or phrase in question?
Please thoughtfully respond to at least two peers.
Two peers
(1) Browsing twitter I saw a friend posted “I’m dead.” reffering to how he was feeling after a hard week at school.
In this example, the phrase “I’m dead” is used in a social media post or comment. The post could be a response to a funny or shocking meme or a comment on a controversial topic. The ambiguity lies in the fact that the phrase “I’m dead” could be interpreted in multiple ways. Is the person literally dead? Are they figuratively dead because they find something extremely funny or disturbing? Or are they using it as a way of expressing disbelief or shock?
The phrase “I’m dead” is a colloquial expression commonly used on social media to convey various emotions. It’s often used as a way of expressing disbelief or shock in response to a surprising or funny situation. However, the phrase could also be used figuratively to convey extreme emotional reactions or to express feeling exhausted or overwhelmed. It’s important to note that the meaning of the phrase depends on the context in which it’s used.
In conclusion, ambiguity is prevalent in social media posts and comments. The use of ambiguous phrases like “I’m dead” can lead to confusion and misinterpretation. It’s important to consider the context of the post and the intended meaning behind the words used. Being aware of ambiguity can help us communicate more effectively and avoid misunderstandings in our online interactions.
(2) While I was browsing my Facebook I saw my friend’s post in which she quoted Deepak Chopra ” Instead of thinking outside the box, get rid of the box”.
The ambiguous word in this context is “box”. Because if you are not familiar with the saying “think outside the box”, you will think that the box is a container with a flat base and sides, which would change the meaning entirely. For example, if you were looking for a paper in a huge box full of documents, then someone tell you: Why are you wasting your time? Think outside the box. You may start looking in another box or another room, while it could be in another building, or it could not be existed anymore. Or you may interpret “outside the box” as think creatively. However, if you word the idea as question. Why should I get rid of the box instead of thinking outside it?? Without being familiar with the first part of the quote, you will figure out that in this context Deepak Chopra used the word “box” indicating limit possibilities. We are just keeping ourselves from the limitless opportunities that we could only explore if we had avoided the box “our possibilities” entirely and been ambiguous about what we can do. She Meant that the best solution is one that doesn’t exist, or at least isn’t right now.
