Outline your paper as follows, with labeled sections I-V (but not with sub-sections a,b,c, etc.):
I. Introduction (1-2 pages)
a. Introduce the specific research question you investigate in this study:
i.e. This study explores how transfer students in a southern California University experience their transition from a community college to a research university.?
NOTE: You need to use pseudonyms for the setting (as well as the people).
b. Why have you chosen this topic/cultural group?
i.e. Having been a transfer student myself, I have observed first-hand the lack
of resources and institutional support… ?
c. Review prior literature (the work you used in your annotated bibliography)
and explain how your study adds to existing literature.
i.e. Earlier work in this area of study has focused on … These studies, however, do not shed light on the importance of …. in the ways in which transfer students experience the new setting. The current study aims at redressing this gap by examining how … (conclude with your research question here).?
In summarizing prior literature make sure to tell us BRIEFLY what the main argument these authors are making and what their main findings are.
Include key concepts that you will use in your analysis (if any).

II. Methodology (1-2 pages)
In this section you need to cite at least one methodological article from the class readings.
a. Describe the specific research methods you used
o Where did you carry out your research? (For participant observation)
o Who are your research participants? (For interview-based research)
b. What sorts of data did you collect?

this study? Locate yourself within the project.
III. Results (3 pages)
a. Organize and present your findings using 3-5 data excerpts.
b. If you did interviews, include interview excerpts in single-spaced italics; if you
did fieldwork, include two examples of fieldnotes.
c. Make sure you draw on specific evidence in your data when you discuss your
points. After you present each data excerpt, discuss it (analyze it) drawing on the key details that demonstrate your point. How, specifically, does this example illustrate the cultural issue that is the focus of your analysis? In ethnography, details matter, so point to particular words/phrases of the interviewee, vivid details of a situation, the context etc.
d. Incorporate concepts, ideas, terms that you found in the relevant literature to show how your data fit into the larger sociological discourse around this topic.
IV. Conclusion (1??2 page)
a. Briefly summarize what are the major findings of your research and make a concluding statement (argument) about your project.
b. Make suggestions for future research; if you had had more time, what other issues would you have liked to investigate (more participants, slightly different population, new methods, focus on a different angle etc.).
c. Finally comment on the broader implications of your research. How might your study help contribute (even in a small way) to peoples understanding of the topic you examine, and why are your findings important?
