Original Question-
There are many sources of data that can be used in a qualitative case study. Common sources are questionnaires with open-ended questions, one-on-one semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and archival data. You have been asked to conduct a qualitative case study of high school teachers to explore their thoughts and perceptions about the use of tablets in the classroom. Which of the above sources would be the best sources of data to conduct this research as a qualitative case study? Why? Which of these data sources would be less useful for a qualitative case study design? Why?

Good evening class,
Gathering data from various data sources can be beneficial to a qualitative case study. Case studies use three or more sources of evidence and data to understand phenomena (Yin, 2014). In addition, case studies reveal in-depth information about phenomena (Yin, 2014). In this case, I would focus more on using questionnaires with open-ended questions, one-on-one semi-structured interviews, and archival data. Conducting one-on-one interviews, observations, and reviewing documents and artifacts can help researchers explore ideas, situations, and experiences first-hand (Salvador, 2016). Semi-structured interviews allow researchers to examine participants' feelings, thoughts, and beliefs about a specific topic or issue. Researchers gather more detailed and rich information from participants which helps researchers learn the reasons behind the answers. Greenberger (2021) stated that interviews give researchers a better understanding of people’s perceptions, views, feelings, etc. Close-ended questions elicit quantitative responses, while open-ended questions lead to free-flowing text responses. Open-ended questions can be beneficial to researchers who choose to take a qualitative approach. Open-ended questions allow researchers to analyze qualitative data that can help them find out why something has happened and inform decisions (Atılgan et al., 2020). The focus group approach can be beneficial to qualitative studies, yet in this case, I would not use it because some people might feel uncomfortable and overwhelmed with being in a group setting. This can be difficult with participants voicing their opinions freely without judgment.

In a qualitative case study, a primary data source to explore teacher thoughts about the use of tablets in the classroom best outcomes is using a focus group. In a case study, a researcher’s goal is to investigate a group that can present responses to the study such as tablets used in the classroom. Additionally, in a focus group, teachers would participate in a detailed method that a researcher has constructed to guide and record the teachers’ perceptions on the use of tables in a public or private institution; with a goal to present technology can improve learning (Montrieux, 2014). Therefore, a researcher will set up a focus group to capture a specific boundary and case unit that will frame stages of a focus group (Liamputtong, 2011).
Narrative would be less useful in this qualitative study purpose given that narrative focuses on a person’s story (Sources of Data, n.d.). Narrative data source is based on stories, and stories can be lengthy and misled from embellishments, for these reasons the researcher would have a difficult time to bring out a true meaning of why technology in classroom’s use of tables would improve classroom learning.

Selecting the most appropriate and practical method is an important decision and must be taken carefully. Open-ended semi-structured interview questions probe in-depth responses about people’s experiences, perceptions, opinions, feelings, and knowledge. Data consists of verbatim quotations and sufficient content/context making it a suitable data collection method for the scenario. Participants should do most of the talking as the researcher tries to understand their perception of their world. Sophisticated interpersonal skills are required, particularly the ability to accurately interpret and respond to the nuanced behavior of participants in various settings. Focus groups are unstructured interviews with multiple participants, allowing participants and a facilitator to interact freely and build on ideas and conversation. This method allows for collecting group-generated data, which can be a challenging experience. Observation involves descriptions of activities, behaviors, actions, conversations, interpersonal interactions, organization or community processes, or any other aspect of observable human experience. Finally, observation is critical in interviews and focus groups (Api & Evans, 2019).
