Research Ethics (100 points)
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to further your understanding of the historical context for ethical principles in research, and to think critically about the impact unethical behavior can have on people.
This activity assesses the following learning outcomes:
Demonstrate appropriate information literacy, including the ability to perform effective database searches.
Communicate effectively in writing and demonstrate appropriate use of APA style.
Critically and skeptically evaluate psychological information and extend this critical thinking to your own work and all aspects of life-long learning.
Demonstrate an appreciation of contextual influences on individual behavior and diversity of perspectives, including those related to race, class, gender, sexuality, disability, nationality and culture.
Recognize professional ethics inherent in different aspects of psychology.
Task: You will select a case study from the list provided and conduct an analysis. See the steps to follow below.
Final Product: In Blackboard, submit a 2-3 page paper (word or pdf document) in APA-style that provides: (1) a brief summary of the events of the case, (2) discusses the ethical controversies/violations in relation to the ethical principles and researcher responsibilities discussed in class, (3) discusses the lasting impact of the case on the affected population, field of study, institution, or society and (4) makes suggestions on how the ethical issues could have been addressed by the researcher(s)/or the checks and balances needed by the institution to avoid it happening again. You should include a references page (not part of the page limit).
Steps:
1. Look through the list of possible case studies provided for you. Choose one that is of interest to you.
2. Click on the link and read/look through the source provided for you. This source is just a starting point, but you can add sources as necessary. Note, your sources do not have to be peer-reviewed, but they should be .
3. Take notes, considering the following:
Who was involved? Who were the injured parties?
What happened? What was the purpose?
What ethical principles were violated and how?
How were researcher responsibilities not upheld?
What harm was done?
What were the consequences of that harm?
How might that harm have had a lasting impact on the affected population, society, fields of study, and/or institutions?
How might the researcher(s) have avoided violating ethical principles and upheld their responsibilities to research participants?
What checks and balances could keep the harm from happening again?
4. Construct a narrative in 2-3 pages discussing the case. At minimum you should include:
A brief summary of the events of the case
A discussion of the ethical controversies/violations in relation to the ethical principles and researcher responsibilities discussed in class.
A discussion of the lasting impact of the case on the affected population, field of study, institution, or society.
Suggestions on how the ethical issues could have been addressed by the researcher(s)/or the checks and balances needed by the institution to avoid it happening again.
A References page.

Materials/Instruments subsections provide detailed descriptions of all instruments and materials to be used, including items, scoring and reliability/validity, as appropriate.
Procedure subsection provides a detailed description of what participants will experience from beginning to end of study.
5) Analysis Plan & Expected Results Section
Provides a detailed and accurate description of data analyses?that will be conducted.
Chooses correct statistical test.
Clearly and correctly outlines all expected results.
Include any graphs, figures, and or tables, as necessary.
6) Discussion Section
Summarizes purpose, hypothesis, and expected?results.
Interprets expected results in context of previous research.
Discusses practical applications of study.
Discusses limitations of research (e.g., methodological, statistical, and/or theoretical).
Discusses ethical considerations of study and results, particularly for vulnerable populations?and/or implications for diverse populations.
Proposes future research.

Lists all sources and formatted appropriately.
8) Appendices
Includes any necessary supplemental materials and is formatted appropriately.
