Annotated Bibliography
Find 15 peer-reviewed or working papers that will be peer-reviewed papers that are related to your research topic.
Find 5 other news articles or reports (not peer-reviewed).
DETAILS ON THE TYPES OF PAPERS TO FIND:
The papers/articles/reports you find should fit the following 3 categories (you can determine how many papers from each, given what makes sense for your research question), but you should have at least two peer-reviewed research papers from each category:
Directly related to your research question, meaning the treatment variable and the outcome variable are the same. Somehow your research question is building on this literature, and that’s the argument you’ll make in your literature review section about the value of your research to this end.
Directly related to your outcome variable(s), but not your treatment variable. E.g. you are measuring the effects of sugar consumption on GPA. This would be papers that also look at what affects GPA, but none of them include a look at sugar. These papers might help you determine good identification strategies, etc. These types of papers can be powerful if they show you are contributing to the literature with a variable that is correlated with GPA but has never been considered from a causal perspective.
Directly related to your treatment variable, but not your outcome variable. So you find papers talking about how sugar’s causal effect on mental health, or on income, or on something else, but not on GPA. Again, these papers will give you ideas for the econometric analysis, data viz ideas, etc.
3. Provide the citations for all 20 in Bibliography style breaking your Bibliography down (just for this assignment) by the type 1, 2 or 3 outlined above. You can use any citation method you prefer (I suggest Chicago), but you should choose one and be consistent.
For example, your submission will include a Bibliography in the following format:
Bibliography:
1. Papers directly related to research question:
etc
2. Papers directly related to outcome variable(s) Y (state your Y(s)):
etc
3. Papers directly related to variable of interest X (state your X):
etc.
Of the 15 academic peer-reviewed/working papers, choose 7 of them that best cover your research topic.
At least two should be from each category above.
This means, if you ONLY were making your argument about your research question based on the literature, which ones help you argue your hypothesis about your research question best? Also, if your topic has a very important, but old paper that started the research on your topic then at some point that paper definitely should be cited, but not necessarily a major part of your literature review. You’ll know if a paper like this exists because it will be cited in most other papers you read on your topic.
For each of the 7 papers, complete #2-3 below within your Bibliography (below that paper’s citation) of your 20 papers/articles.
Creating an Annotated Bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research.
Do #1-3 above, so that by this point you have 15 peer-reviewed/working papers in your Bibliography.
Briefly examine and review the actual papers. Use the news articles/reports for statistics and anecdotes to motivate your research question. You’ll use the peer-reviewed/working papers for your actual Literature Review.
See my suggestions from the beginning of the semester for how to review a paper: Read Intro, Conclusion and state the research question, what data they use (dates, observation, sources, etc), what they find, how it relates to your research and how you build on it.
Write a concise annotation (about 150 words per citation). The annotation should:
What research question does this paper analyze?
How is it different from your research question and how is it similar to your research question?
What data do they use and how does it differ from your data and how is it similar to your data?
What years do they examine?
What do the authors find? How does that support your hypothesis for your research question, or why might you expect a different result?
How does your paper offer something different from this paper?
This Annotated Bibliography — 150 word analysis for these 7 papers — will be the basis for writing up a Literature Review later on. You’ll use this to put together your argument purely from the literature.
