Identify and explain Weber’s three basic models of authority.
What can the humanist, pluralist, and formal approaches contribute to organizational theory?? (b) How does the combination of these approaches shape your view on how to manage a public organization?
Breanna Alvarez: What I found important in this week’s material is the variety of ways in how to provide efficient and accessible services for citizens in navigating their dealings with the government. I did not expect there to be so many ways that citizens can handle the government’s authority. Max Weber distinguishes the difference between the three types of authority. It focuses more on the roots of the authority within organizations, and the three basic models are traditional, charismatic, and rational-legal. To start off, traditional authority?is based on the sacredness of traditions. It depends on the loyalty of individuals to someone who has traditionally become chief?. Charismatic authority?rests on personal devotion to an individual because of the exceptional sanctity, heroism, or exemplary character of this person. Lastly, rational-legal authority?is based on legally established impersonal order. Its strength lies in the foundation of law, which establishes its legitimacy. The three approaches focus on the organizational theory by the basic structure. The first approach is the?humanist approach, it looks inside the bureaucracy, focusing on the life of individual workers within the organization. The second approach is the?pluralist approach?emphasizes the realities of political life and focuses on a fundamentally political model of organizational interactions as well as the ability of societys politically active interest groups to shape bureaucracys behavior.?Lastly, we have the formal approach?return to a structural perspective but add a very different theoretical twist as they view bureaucracy as networks of contracts, built around systems of hierarchy and authority. Between these approaches, it shows the different ways in how to manage a public organization and the way is by network analysis. Network analysis begins with the discovery that the management of programs depends on the interconnections among those who implement programs and that links of the implementation process often lie outside the bureaucratic chain of command.?
Tyler Owens: I felt that one of the most important things learned from the reading is that none of the approaches to organizational theory can stand on their own there has to be overlap or there will be many issues that cannot be fixed because each approach ignores too many factors. I was not confused in the reading
Webers three models are the traditional, charismatic, and rational-legal models of authority. The Traditional model is as it states based on traditional views the people follow others because of their loyalty to the ?boss title. The Charismatic model is based on individuals and how they feel about the bosss? character and how it inspires them to listen to them. The rational-legal model is based on established rules or laws that decided who has authority and who listens to them.
?
The Humanist Theory contributes the process of improving people and their motivations. The pluralist feel contributes political maneuvering and ?beliefs through financial groups. The Formal explores individual motivations for work and the associated transaction cost. These three approaches shape our view by imparting each of their values on us because they all have flaws when used alone the humanist doesnt maximize profits or take into account political influence, the pluralist only takes politics into account it doesnt leave room for the human or cost analysis and the formal takes most of its focus on profit. By combining these approaches, we are given a view that gives the people happiness while keeping the reality of political influence without inflating it and an ability to quantify how much happiness is worth and if the cost outweighs the benefit
