The dilemma for D. Vaji is one of conflicting information. The evaluation from the on-site director is one on a positive side, glowing abut Leo’s work. On the other hand, Dr. Vaji and other students that are the program, have seen another side of Leo. They have collectively seen Leo use racial remarks and brag abut how he was able to fool his on-site supervisor. The doctor needs to know how best to choose to incorporate not just the on-site supervisor evaluation, but also the evaluation from the other students and the doctor. The other students in the program in their evaluation of Leo was not in positive light. They said he displayed actions and words that were not consistent with the multicultural diversity training and the meetings with Dr. Vaji. The dilemma is about ethics and multicultural work from Leo and how the Dr. Vaji should evaluate Leo. “Multicultural competency is necessary for psychologists working in all domains: practice, research, consultation, and education” (American Psychological Association, 2018).
This affects the practice of psychology by unfairly treating multicultural clients in a different manner by judging the client’s harshly and / or unfairly. Leo’s negative behavior, if in fact are true, out in the public eye can tarnish the reputation of all psychologists, and the field of psychology in general. “Psychologists strive to conduct culturally appropriate and informed research, teaching, supervision, consultation, assessment, interpretation, diagnosis, dissemination, and evaluation of efficacy” (American Psychological Association, 2018). Leo could receive more sensitive and multicultural training from his program, as well as having more meetings with D. Vaji and / or his on-site training. People may have misguided conceptions and biases towards other people, but with some extra training and thought processes, people, including Leo, can overcome these biases and move toward being more multicultural competent, and therefore a better psychologist.
