Chapter 2:
The purpose of this chapter is to provide information on how you can increase your ability/skills to search and retrieve relevant research/resources that supports the nursing practice. Being able to find good studies (Research) is essential for nurses to provide Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).
There are several research retrieval mechanisms/ways to help guide you to the best studies for your practice or papers.
Chapter 2 describes search strategies to assist you finding good studies to inform your practice. Table 2-2 shows how limiters help you to home in on specifics for your broader topic for information retrieval so you can review fewer studies for your final research based recommendations.

Chapter 3:
Chapter 3 is about the Research Process. The Research Process provides a structure for the study design. Table 3.1 shows the differences and similarities between the research process and the nursing process. Both provide a logical progression and a systematic way of looking at a problem.
his chapter provides us with the Process of Research. When the research process is used correctly, it provides a systematic research process that guides the research search. Chapter 3 is important as it shows why research is so important to nursing and can define one’s professional practice.

Assignment # 1 Searching for an Assigned Topic
The topic for Spring 2023 is Covid-19
You have two options for displaying this assignment:
Template attached below and Table 2-2 in the Langford and Young textbook.
PURPOSE:
1. Program Learning Outcome #1: Integrate evolving knowledge into clinical nursing practice.
2. PLO # 3: Demonstrate skill using patient care technologies, information systems, and communication devices that support safe nursing practice.
There are two goals for this lesson:
First, to develop skills using the U of A Library on how to retrieve research articles. ****You will need these skills for future assignments and professional practice.
Second, learn how to set up a reference list in APA 7.
Why do you want to develop these skills? Using a broad topic, you will get too many research article titles to review efficiently (sometimes millions). Therefore, you need to know how to limit (filter) the search results to a small enough number to review and choose which ones will work for your patient(s) or assignment.

Table 2-1 shows Boolean Operator Examples (using OR, AND, & NOT).
Table 2-2 shows how to display a search (see assignment #1 rubric).

Assignment #1
Step 1: Log into the UofA libraries Homepage using your email address and password.
One Search is the toggle where you type in your broad search term, or a journal title, or an article title. If you know the article title (Assignment #3 & #4 in this class), you put the title in and search to access the article.

Words to know:
Databases are collected listings of related information
Electronic databases??Collections of sources accessed through the library.
Limiters or Filters- refining options to reduce the number of sources your general Search turns up.
Health and nursing Databases are EBSCO, PROQUEST, MEDLINE, or CINAHL.
STEP 2: CHRONICLE YOUR SEARCH
In this assignment, you are ONLY searching for research articles. You do not need to save or download the articles unless you want.
Search the broad topic for this class. Type the assigned broad term into the OneSearch space where it says search everything, then click Search
Enter the number of results in your assignment table (write down the number of results)

Start your search
I usually start with dates, then language, and online only.
Write down the number of results for each limiter (filter) you put in. This assignment shows you how many results you will get with each limiter.
The assignment goal and your future search goal is to reduce the number of results to less than 50 (see rubric). You can then quickly look at the abstracts (Assignment #3 & #4) to see what the researchers did and if you want to read the full article for details.
Do not stop limiting to 2000 articles. You cannot review 2000 articles for any assignments in an 8-week class.
This assignment is about you learning the process for your future sanity.
STEP 3:
Choose five research articles from your final search results.
For this assignment, you are only looking for research articles.
So, open a likely-looking article title to check the abstract.
Ensure the abstract is complete:
Some sort of introduction (background) or purpose.
Methods or type of research format & the subjects (people in the study)
Results (what the researchers found)
It should discuss the type of study (quantitative vs. qualitative) and the number of subjects (N) in the study. If it says Quality Improvement Initiative or Six Sigma, it is NOT research and cannot be used in this assignment. If it says it is a CE, it is not research.
Make a note or use the citation toggle to get the required content for a reference list for each research article you find (see example in the textbook) or use the example in the announcement for this week.
This is NOT correct APA 7, but it is close enough you can copy it and make minor corrections. It is also NOT A CITATION; it is a reference list format.
STEP 4: CHRONICLE YOUR SEARCH for the assignment.
Your submission should display the limiters and how many articles you have after each step- write down the # after each limiter or take a picture with your phone.
You can use any presentation style to present/document your two searches from two database search sites. The easiest way is with a table.
There is an example in the lesson and a similar example in the textbook.
First, include the name of the database you are searching for-
Next, you will search only your broad term and record the number of articles found
Each database will have some standard limiters (filters), and some will have unique limiters
Continue to record your Search and the number of articles you have after each limiter
This is an example. You can choose to start with the date or the language limiter
Limit to full-text research journals,
Limit to peer-review articles,
Limit to less than one, two, or three years (one year will help narrow your Search)
Limit research conducted in the United States,
Limit for the English language
Limit the discipline (such as nursing) and other topics, such as specific populations, older adults, pediatrics, surgical patients, etc. You can use more than one limiter in this section.
STEP 5: REFERENCES List (part two of the assignment).
After finishing the two database searches, select five research articles you reviewed to ensure they are researched and prepare ONE reference list using APA 7th ed.
Choose two from one database and three from the other.
Review the APA resources on how to set up a reference list (Section 2.12 in APA 7).
STEP 6: SUBMIT
Review the rubric to ensure you have all the contents required for the assignment.
Submit your assignment (Two database searches and a reference list with five article titles) using the link above with the assignment name.
