Another stereotypical image of the homeless struggling and destitute. However, to my surprise, after this man got situated in his spot, he was holding his popcorn and sipping a small cup of coffee, looking quite content. This was Mike, a human being down on his luck who later helped me shape some of my worldviews on charity and life.”• “It all started on a high school trip to Denver where I worked for a non-profit organization called “GrowHaus,” which is a volunteer indoor farm providing agricultural education, production and distribution. It was through this organization that I met Mike and first began to be exposed to the personal stories of the homeless. I learned about Mike’s life and how his father was killed in a car crash while his mother consequently abandoned him due to economic strain. He was forced to drift around without parental guidance or a proper education and eventually fell into hard drug use and ended up in jail. This interaction completely broke down all my stereotypes about the homeless. Like most people, I had the misunderstanding that individuals who are homeless are often mentality challenged or delinquent criminals. However, I later realized that they’re just people as normal as anyone, but with lives filled with terrible circumstances beyond their control. However, despite facing these obstacles, these individuals like Mike can still be optimistic, especially after being greeted with a sense of compassion and encouragement from the community.”
