FUNCTIONAL AND DYSFUNCTIONAL CONFLICT IN THE WORKPLACE
In your work as an HR professional, you may find yourself involved in both functional and dysfunctional conflict situations when there are disagreements between individuals or groups in the workplace. One of your goals will be to help employees address and manage functional conflicts before they become dysfunctional.
As discussed by Liddle (2017), “conflict pivots between functional or dysfunctional conflict based on our perceptions.” Functional conflict, when approached in a positive way can “be a powerful driver of change, learning and growth” (Liddle, 2017, p. 20) and “can spark innovation, trust and engagement” (Meinert, 2017, para. 4). Conversely, dysfunctional conflict, or negative conflict, in the workplace “drains energy, which is costly to companies, teams and relationships” (Meinert, 2017, para. 5).

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
As HR professionals, we come to realize that most conflicts are not necessarily due to either party being right or wrong. These conflicts more commonly exist due to differing perceptions or understandings of the parties involved. As you studied in Week 1, conflict can be positive and strengthen individuals’ performance and workplace productivity. Employees and even situations can benefit with the implementation of conflict management methods such as effective communications, cooperation, and team-building techniques.

Week 3 Discussion
MEDIATION IN THE WORKPLACE
Mediation is an effective, collaborative, conflict resolution method that, although informal and voluntary, still requires the agreement and commitment to the process from both parties. HR professionals can use mediation as a tool to promote more effective communications and understanding among employees in the workplace. As the mediator, the HR professional can facilitate the process, keep the lines of communication open, and assist the parties with arriving at a mutually satisfying solution to a workplace disagreement or dispute.

CONSIDERING CONFLICT MANAGEMENT STYLES
As an HR professional, it is helpful to consider conflict management styles of each of the parties involved to effectively manage conflict in a workplace situation. Each of the five conflict management styles has the goal of arriving at a resolution through different levels of assertiveness and cooperativeness. Keeping this in mind, for this Discussion, you are asked to take a closer look at and explain each of the five conflict management styles.

RELATING CONFLICT MANAGEMENT STYLES TO CONFLICT MANAGEMENT SKILLS
This week, you will continue to consider conflict management styles as you learn how each style utilizes different modes or strategies to address conflict. These strategies are based on four different factors, all of which HR professionals must be acutely aware of during conflict situations in the workplace. Astrid Baumgardner writes of these in her blog post “Conflict Management Styles: The Start of Effective Conflict Management”:
“Issues – The extent to which important priorities, principles, or values are involved in the conflict
Relationship – The importance of maintaining a close, mutually supportive relationship with the other party [or parties]
Relative Power – The balance of power between you and the other party [or parties]
Available Time – How much time you have to resolve the issue” (Baumgardner, 2012).

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT SIMULATION REFLECTION
In this Discussion, you will have an opportunity to discuss your role and experience in the Conflict Management Simulation—a human resource professional striving to help a manager and employee manage the conflict that has arisen between them. This life-like scenario and the simulation were designed not only to put you in the “driver’s seat,” but also to give you this opportunity to reflect, which is a process essential to professional growth.
Now that you have completed the Simulation, consider what you have learned about conflict management and interacting with others as an HR professional. Also, review the Learning Resources and then address the following:
