1 Assignment Guidelines – Letter to the Editor Value: 25% Due: Day before week 5 class by 4 p.m. Paper length: Maximum 1.5-2 pages (excluding title page and reference page) PURPOSE A scholarly letter to the editor is a piece of academic writing. A balanced editorial is more likely to be read and appreciated. The purpose of writing a letter to the editor is to bring a professional nursing or client care issue to the attention of the readership of either a public newspaper (e.g., Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, National Post) a professional journal (e.g., Canadian Journal of Nursing Research) or a professional association (e.g., RNAO, CNA). The letter can be for/against an issue related to healthcare or the healthcare system, or to inform the readership about an issue. Letters to editors are generally found on the editorial page of the publication. The reasons you may want to bring an issue to the attention of a readership are varied: – you are concerned about an issue and want others to know; – an issue is important to the profession, and you are compelled to speak out; – you want others to consider a specific action; – to educate the public; and/or – to influence policymakers. ISSUE SELECTION The issue selected for the assignment must be an issue that we discuss in this course (i.e., from the course syllabus/weekly topic outline, weekly lectures, discussions in class). Here is a list of topics you can choose from: 1. Food insecurity and impact on management of chronic disease (Ex.: diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia). 2. Illness experience related to social determinants of health (SDH)- poverty, homelessness, health literacy. 3. Client abuse by nurses, interprofessional teams OR family members. 4. Care of Indigenous Peoples and the healthcare system. 5. Barriers to interprofessional collaboration. 6. Clients? and families? experiences in long term care/residence care/nursing home (choose one location only). 7. Client safety and medication errors and/or patient safety issues by student nurses. 8. Readmission rates to facilities. METHOD OF SUBMISSION – The paper must be submitted the day before the Week 5 class by 1600 via D2L – Submission should be done via a WORD document. If you are concerned about alignment of the paper you can also submit the paper in PDF version, but a WORD version is a must. – Papers submitted to Turnitin/D2L late will be subject to a late penalty as per the Toronto Metropolitan University, Centennial, George Brown College Collaborative Degree Program Student Handbook.
2 PAPER LENGTH 1.5-2 pages double spaced FORMAT The letter to the editor should include (for further details see the marking rubric): – A salutation (i.e., Dear [Name of Editor] or Name of Publication, but address is not required). – An introduction – A body – A conclusion – At the end of the letter the student?s name and title (i.e., Year 2 Nursing Student, Nursing School Name, Institution Name). Learning Management System/Grading: – Review marking rubric. – All written assignments are graded using the guideline for grading written assignments (in Collaborative Program Student Handbook; pages 41-44) References: – For this assignment, scholarly references must be from Canadian sources and come from outside of the course outline/reading list of sources. – This includes the use of grey literature retrieved from relevant Canadian professional websites such as those listed in the resources above (e.g., best practice standards/competencies, white papers, reports, official documents, FAQ?s, newsletters, research, and scholarly literature, etc.). – In terms of the number of references, please utilize your judgment on the number of references needed and is appropriate to support your argumentation and points raised. Examples: Information from The Toronto Star ,2022 Thank you for your interest in The Star. If you want to submit an opinion article for consideration, please send it to [email protected]. We consider commentaries of words on current affairs, with an emphasis on Canadian issues. We tend not to print personal essays or broadly themed philosophical, religious, or historical articles. Writers must include their credentials and are expected to have expertise (knowledge) in the area they are discussing. If you have an involvement in or connection with an issue that is not apparent from your credentials or the content of the article, you must disclose that to the Star. As for style and approach, please keep these points in mind: 1- Be topical. ?? Make clear near the beginning of the piece why you?re writing it now. ?? Does your argument relate to something in the news? Does it expose a trend? ?? The answer to the question Why now?? should be evident. 2- Be fair.
3 ?? Don?t ignore your opponents? point of view or mischaracterize it. ?? Don?t engage with only the flimsiest counter-arguments. ?? Don?t demonize or diminish those you?re criticizing. ?? Imagine what the smartest critic might say about your piece and take those arguments on ? that?s where things get interesting and illuminating. 3- Keep your audience in mind. ?? Assume your reader is intelligent. ?? Provide enough context so a person who knows little about the subject can understand your argument and why it matters. ?? Don?t use jargon or overly obscure or formal language. 4- Add to the conversation. ?? If the topic of your piece has already been widely discussed in the media, make sure you?re adding new information or a new line of argument to the conversation. 5- Stick to the word limit. ?? Word limits are not arbitrary and won?t be ignored even for exceptional pieces. ?? Space in print ? and attention spans online ? are finite.
