Instructions
The goal of the proposal is to create a working thesis statement and basic research plan that considers context, audience, purpose, and presents potential sources. A proposal is not an outline, as it does not structure the paper. Rather, a proposal offers direction for research needs and gives your professor an opportunity to provide feedback before the drafting process.
Access the Pro-Position Proposal Template and complete the six required sections:
- Subject
- Research Question
- Claim
- Research Plan
- Synthesis Matrix (Add the 3 pro sources.)
- Reference Page
For an example proposal, refer to pages 269-270 of our textbook.

3 SOURCE COLLECTION via a Synthesis Matrix
A Synthesis Matrix is basically a visual representation of our collected resources. It shows the breakdown of topic to specific evidence. Please fill in the table below with your 3 collected resources (you should have at least one from this week’s discussion board). SUBJECT: Pros of vaccinations
RESEARCH QUESTION: Who benefits from vaccinations?
CLAIM: Children, communities, and future generations benefit from
vaccinations.
RESEARCH PROPOSAL: I knew I wanted to work with the vaccinations topic because
there are at least 2 established points of view on the subject:
pro-vaxers and anti-vaxers, making this a good topic choice
for the final paper in this class where I have to present both
sides of the argument. After a bit of initial research, I found
that one side dealt mostly in statistics and the other side used
a lot of personal testimonies, but both can motivate
audiences in their own ways. The thesis should work well
since it focuses on 3 potential audiences. Most people think
in terms of children when they think vaccinations, but their
impact goes beyond that, so I’d like to emphasize this
approach in my paper. As far as complications go, I do not
think I’ll have problem finding research that supports the
use of vaccinations. I may have issues, though, convincing
an audience who has already decided how they feel about
this topic. It is emotional topic, so presenting logical

reasoning will only go so far in countering an emotional
argument.

vaccines, like the flu

health care system. Since
