Scenario
You have recently been hired as an assistant at a local behavioral health organization that provides counseling services to individuals with disorders related to substance use and mental health. As part of your first case, you will assess an individual’s symptoms using criteria from the DSM-5. You will present the case to the treatment teamand make recommendations for treatment services(by writing a paper). Doing this will require you to understandaddiction, demonstrate the ability to diagnose someone with a substance use disorder, and know the various treatment options and resources available. You will deliver this information in a written paper that will evolve over the course of the next 7 weeks.
Directions
Using one of the provided case studies, you will write a 1,500-word researchpaper that will explore substance use disorders/addiction and demonstrate an understanding of substance use disorders and their treatment.This assignment will be completed in sections over the course of the next 7 weeks.You will be expected to utilize information from the lectures, supplemental resources, and your own research to explore the clinical assessment process, understand the various forms of treatment interventions, and apply this understanding to your case.

Read the two case studies provided for this project. These case studies are included at the end of this document (in Appendix A).
In a one-paragraph response, indicate which case study you will use to complete your research paper and explain the reason(s) why you chose thisparticular case study.Describeany initial thoughts you have on what this person may need to be successful in recovery. This will become the basis of the introduction for your paper.

Week 3: DSM-5 Criteria Checklist
• Due by the end of Week 3 at 11:59 pm, ET.
This week you will usea checklist of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria (providedin Appendix B at the end of this document and within Week 3 in Blackboard), to diagnose the client from your selected case study. In a one-pagewrite-up, identify your diagnosis and explain which of the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria your client meets. Make sure to provide supporting evidence and examples for your diagnosis and each of the criteria your client meets.
Week 4: Assessment and Treatment Recommendation
• Due by the end of Week 4 at 11:59 pm, ET.
Utilizing information from your research and resources, explain which treatment interventions would be appropriate to recommendfor the individual from your case study.Choose as many as you feel appropriate, but ensure that you use sound research in order to substantiate and support your reasoning.

Choose one organization, write about the services offered by this organization,andexplain which of theservices offered would meet the needs of the client in your case study. This section should be completed in at least a one-page response. Make sure that your properly cite the sources of your research in APA style.
Week 6: Rough Draft and Peer Review
• Due by the end of Week 6 at 11:59 pm, ET.
Combine the sections of the project you completed in Weeks 2-5 into one larger paper. Make sure to add transitions between the sections of the paper and ensure that everything is written in complete sentences, with proper APA style.
Upload a rough draft of your portfolio project paperto the discussion forum located in the activities folder in Week 6. In your initial post, in addition to attaching your paper, provide specific areas that you would like recommendations for improvement and the type of feedback you are looking for from your classmates and instructor.
After you post your paper, review and reply to two of your peers’ submissions. Your replies should go beyond simply telling your classmates that they did a nice job or that you liked their paper. Instead, you should use the grading rubric as a guide to provide your classmates with specific strategies, thoughts, or ideas you think would help them to improve their assignment.Acceptable feedback could include comments regarding grammar and spelling, proper APA formatting, more specific information regarding DSM-5 criteria, etc.
In addition to feedback from your peers, feedback will also be provided by your instructor prior to your final submission in Week 7. Make sure to utilize this feedback to make any necessary changes to your project prior to the final submission.
Week 7: Final Submission to ePortfolio
• Due by the end of Week 7 at 11:59 pm, ET.
This week is the final submission of your Portfolio Project. Incorporate instructor feedback, make any additional corrections, and submit to your ePortfolio.

a) Analyze the importance of this project to your future career.
b) In your own words reflect on how this project meets the Program and Institutional outcomes stated on the first page.
c) If you were to take this class again, detail how would you approach this project differently.
Upload and submit your final reflection to Blackboard.
