Observation Paper:
For this assignment, students must summarize their observation of a child in a real-world setting or in a TV or movie setting.
Students must then demonstrate an understanding of child development concepts by applying them to a detailed description and assessment of the child being observed. Lastly, students will include a personal reflection in which they compare their own childhood development to the development of the child they observed. Students should cite the textbook or other reputable sources for formal concepts used. This paper is due by Friday, December 9. The paper must be organized in the following manner:
1st section: Introduce child & describe setting. – 10 points.
2nd section: Identify physical & cognitive concepts noted/observed. – 25 points Note characteristics like height & weight; fine & gross motor movements; sensory interactions/reactions; manipulations of things in the environment; usage of language; etc.
3rd section: Identify social/emotional concepts noted/observed. – 25 points Note emotional expressions; temperament; interactions with other people; sources of entertainment; indications of peer conformity (styles or actions common to the age group); etc.
4th section: Reflect on your personal child development experiences and compare your experiences to the presentation, interactions and behaviors of the child observed. Using concepts from the text, hypothesize as to the causes of the differences. – 20 points
The completed paper should be 3 – 4 pages long, not including the title page or reference page. Students must follow APA formatting for the layout, font, citations (there should be several citations from the textbook or other reputable sources), and spacing of this paper. – 10 points
