A young African American girl named Zoey, her first day at her new job and one of her coworkers starts talking to her to get to know her. When Zoey started talking the coworker was shocked, the coworker said “oh my gosh your voice” and Zoey said “what about my voice” the coworker said “you don’t sound ghetto”. Zoey was confused so she asked “what do you mean by that”, the coworker said “oh, well i’m just used to black people sounding ghetto”. This is an example of stereotypes because it’s social categorizing that all black people are “ghetto”. Social categorizing is when you categorize a person in a certain group. Also, another reason this is stereotyping is because not every single black person is ghetto.
Peter got a letter in the mail that determines whether or not he is sick or not. He wanted to open this letter with his girlfriend so he isn’t alone when he gets the news. So he opened the letter and started reading it and started crying. His girlfriend automatically starts telling him ” it’s okay everything will be fine and they will do whatever they can to beat this illness” she proceeds to tell him that she will save up money for treatment and sell her car. Then Peter says “i’m not sick” “the letter says i don’t have it and I’m healthy”. His girlfriend is in shock because she realized that she assumed something was wrong but in actuality he was crying tears of joy. This is an example of prejudice because Peter’s girlfriend already had negative feelings even though they both didn’t know what the letter would say. Prejudice is when you have preconceived thoughts or feelings before something happens or towards someone. In this case the girlfriend was already thinking the worst before even knowing the truth.
For this case scenario I’ll be using my own personal experience because its a very good example of discrimination, this happened to me when I was in pre-school. For parents that work early in the mornings they have a morning day care for the kids. So my parents dropped me off and we would usually sit down and have breakfast. I was sitting down eating when the only seat available was next to me and the teacher sat a little boy down next to me. He starts yelling “No no, I don’t want to sit there!” The teachers were very confused and asked the boy “why not?” the boy then said ” I don’t want to sit there next to her because she’s black”. The teachers were very shocked because they never expected something like that coming from a child. At the end of the day they called his parents and had a parent teacher conference. This is an example of discrimination because the little boy had a negative action towards me an (African American) based on the color of my skin.
There are many ways to reduce discrimination. Making sure one understands the meaning of it is the very first thing that everyone should understand. Parents have a huge play in preventing discriminating, because if they are this way it is highly likely this behavior will pass on to their children. Also, not being so close minded, I say this because some people may be unable to understand and grasp how hurtful this can be to others. Being educated about what discrimination is, what it looks like, and how hurtful/ wrong it is. This is very important because if a person is not educated about this they will not understand that it is wrong.
