At the end of each chapter, your test will include one essay question. For Chapter Three, you can choose from the following questions. During the Chapter Three Test, you will need to submit your Chapter Three Essay. This essay will be graded using the Course Rubric found under the Begin Here section.1. The Civil War: How does the Civil War represent not just a division between the northern and southern states of America, but a division between Americans and idea of America itself? In other words, how war the Civil War a war between an idea and a people? Cite evidence from at least two of the readings from class AND two database sources in your response (you can refer outside Chapter Three).2. An American: Looking at the arch of readings for the class, pick one figure from American literature who you feel best embodies what it means to be American. In what ways does this writer embody the epitome of what it means to be American? You can refer to readings outside Chapter Three, but be sure to cite two primary sources from the class (even if that means using another author’s writings and applying it to the person of your choosing) AND two secondary sources from the databases.3. Romanticism: To what extent is America still a Romantic country? Does America still have Romantic values or have we moved away from those literary and cultural traditions? Cite evidence from at least two of the readings from class AND two database sources in your response (you can refer outside Chapter Three).4. Religion: Patrick Henry, the famous Virginian orator who once supposedly said, ‘Give me liberty or give me death,’ also famously said, ‘It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians.’ Indeed, as you no doubt have noticed, it is nearly impossible to divorce the reading of American literature and the study of its history from religion. Why might this be the case? Why is religion so intertwined with American literature and history, especially considering America was supposedly an ‘enlightened’ nation founded on separation of church and state? Cite evidence from at least two of the readings from class AND two database sources in your response (you can refer outside Chapter Three).5. Transcendentalism: Many have articulated that the transcendentalists, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, as well as Amos Bronson Alcott, Louisa May Alcott, Charles Timothy Brooks, and Walt Whitman, were the heart of Romanticism. They called for action and practiced the ideas only suggested by the Romantics. Yet in the same way they were affected by ideas and injustices of their time, they affected American thought for the next hundred and fifty years. No doubt the philosophies espoused by transcendentalism will continue to influence American literature and thinking as time passes as well. Evaluate the transcendental philosophies of Emerson, Thoreau, Fuller, or Whitman and the influence these philosophies have had on America today. Cite evidence from at least two of the readings from Chapter Three AND two database sources in your response. Best to limit this to 1-2 authors. 6. Theme: Identifying the the main idea (the theme) of a work is the heart of literary analysis. Choose two poems or short stories from chapter three and identify the theme of the works. You’ll ultimately want to answer this question, how does my authors use a literary technique to create their themes? Cite 2 primary sources and 2 secondary sources. Your Chapter Three Essay must be at a minimum, eight hundred words. In addition to citing directly from the required number primary sources (2), it will also be necessary to use two academic references accessed through Walters State’s libraries (no book reviews or encyclopedias). In other words, this essay requires you to use a minimum of four sources. Be sure to also have a Works Cited for these sources at the end of your essay (does not count as part of the word count). It is suggested that you have reviewed your draft many times, ensuring you cite from the required number of authors (at least two) plus the two outside sources. Consider contacting your instructor or, if you need help with proofreading, visit the tutoring center at your campus. You can also use the Writing Lab both in-person (main campus, HUM 120) or via the online tutoring.
