ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXPT 10 (Calorimetry) The lab report for this experiment will be a typical *full formal lab report* with all the usual sections (Title Page, Objective, Introduction, Procedure, Results, Discussion, Conclusion). Follow guidelines for lab reports posted under ‘Lab Info’ for all the required sections. Also follow the guidance from Class #14 and #17 materials, and in the Experiment-10 chapter in the lab manual.Reminder: follow the general guidelines for lab reports posted under ‘Lab Info’.Specific guidelines for some of the sections:* Title page: Insert the grading rubric, linked directly below, into the title page of your lab report.LAB-REPORT-RUBRIC_Expt-10.doc* Objective section: Along with the goals of the experiment, state very briefly how they will be achieved.* Introduction section: – Include explanations of the key concepts in this experiment, including heat capacity, calorimetry, calorimeter, enthalpy of reaction, enthalpy of formation, etc. Don’t just present a list of definitions; weave the explanations into the narrative of this section. – Include an explanation of how Hess’s law applies in the calculation of the *enthalpy of formation* of MgO(s). Illustrate the explanation with all relevant thermochemical equations.* Procedure section: Besides the reference to the lab manual, include any procedural details not mentioned in the manual, and any changes you made from the printed procedure. These should already be written in your lab notebook also.* Results and Calculations section: – Present, in typed format, the data you collected on Part A of the experiment. – *Graphs* of temperature vs time for *each reaction* of Part B must be included in your lab report. This semester you didn’t carry out this part of the experiment, but you received plots of data to analyze. The extrapolated high temperature must be clearly marked and labeled on the plots. – Show clearly how you calculated the heat capacity of the calorimeter (Part A) *and* each of the two enthalpies of reaction (the reaction of magnesium metal with acid *and* the reaction of magnesium oxide with acid). – Show clearly how you calculated the *heat of formation of MgO*. – Follow the guidelines for calculations and data treatment outlined in the lab manual on p. 113. – Cite any sources you use for ‘literature values’.* Include both a Discussion section and a Conclusion section in your report, following the posted general guidelines.* Questions: Question credit is for the pre-lab assignment. There are no post-lab questions required for this lab report.* INSERT photos or scans of relevant pages of your lab notebook at the END of your report. All your data and observations should be visible in the scans (limited to Part A this semester); page numbers, dates, and instructor initials should be visible on all pages also. The size of image files inserted into your document should be as SMALL as possible as long as the writing is LEGIBLE.INITIALED LAB NOTEBOOK PAGES MUST BE VISIBLE AT THE END OF THE LAB REPORT — OTHERWISE, THE LAB REPORT WILL NOT BE GRADED.Export your final word-processed file in PDF format and submit it to the assignment ‘Expt 10’. LAB REPORTS MUST BE IN PDF FORMAT; NO OTHER FORMATS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Check the PDF document carefully before submitting to be sure that it is formatted properly, and that all sections, text, tables, images, equations, etc., are visible and legible. You are responsible for submitting a complete, readable lab report.
