Plato’s Allegory of the Cave
REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT: THE NATURE OF TRUTH
Please read the excerpt from Plato’s The Republic called “The Allegory of the Cave” (the link is available in this week’s readings), as well as the section in your textbook on Greek philosophy (Chapter 2, pp. 64–67 “Philosophy and the Polis” through “Plato’s Republic and Idealism”). Using what you’ve learned in these excerpts as well as in this week’s lesson about philosophy, please use the questions in the Reflection Assignment Sheet to help you decide what you think Plato was arguing about independent thought and how we can trust what we know to be truth.
This two-page essay should be submitted in APA format, avoid plagiarism, and offer some insight into what you’ve learned! Please refer to the Week 1 Reflection Assignment Sheet (Links to an external site.) to answer the prewriting questions and then to compose your essay.
Video: Here is a resource to help you start delving into Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” (Book VII of The Republic):

Week 1 Reflection Assignment: The Search for Truth
Please answer these prewriting questions in complete sentences (the more you write, the better your ideas will be for the essay portion!):
Why do the prisoners in the cave mistake appearance for reality?
Why is it so painful for the freed prisoner to venture first past the fire and then out into the sunlight? Is the pain worth it? Why?
Why might some prisoners, having been exposed to the outside world, choose to return to their shackled lives in the cave?
Why might the remaining prisoners kill the prisoner who returns to free them?
Take your answers to these questions and apply them to life and truth today. Are there any metaphorical “prisoners” in modern life?
The Assignment: Now that you have a deeper understanding of the text, please write a two-page essay on the topic How Can We Trust What We Think We Know? Use examples from the “Allegory of the Cave” to support your answer. Please write your essay below and submit your answers to the prewriting questions as well as the essay in one Word document to Canvas.

Week 2 Assignment
Reflection Assignment Virtual Field Trip
This week, you’ve been reading about the birth and evolution of several major world religions.
For your assignment, you will take a virtual field trip to view the medieval collections of your choice of an online museum.
For this assignment, please review what you learned last week on how to approach history and the humanities. Make sure you’ve spent a bit of time in this week’s lesson and in Chapters 4 and 5 of the textbook.
Visit the online museum of your choice.
Please restrict your search to Africa and Asia between the years 0–1000 AD.
Produce a two-page reflection assignment (see description below).
For your reflection assignment for this week, please select one primary example from the archive and address the following in a two-page reflection assignment.
Explain how the artifact you chose relates to the origins and spread of religion or culture during the medieval period.
In order to be able to really make a strong statement about what you think your artifact means, please go back to the Week 1 Lesson and review the questions historians ask about artifacts. Then, answer the following questions, using your answers to support your ideas about your artifact.
Describe the example you have selected and provide the specific URL and the image.
Explain the origins and context of the example.
Include examples from the textbook this week that help develop your analysis of the work and its context (make connections between some artifacts described in your textbook and the one you chose from the online museum).
You may do outside research, as well, but please use the DeVry Library as much as possible to find compelling sources about your artifact.

Week 3 Assignment
Over the last 2 weeks, you’ve been delving into philosophy, the nature of truth, historical context, and how artifacts reflect their historical context. This week, we’ll be adding to that knowledge with art theory and composition as you examine a painting or a sculpture.
This week, your goal is to help one another create a narrated presentation discussing a Renaissance painting or sculpture. You’ll be divided into groups and have a graded group discussion (worth 20 points, so please make sure that your contribution is evident!) to work in to develop your plan.
Please begin by reading the section in the lesson on art, watching the art tutorial, and then helping one another discuss the components of visual art (line, color, composition, etc.).
Then choose a painting or sculpture by an artist discussed in Chapter 7: The Renaissance: Florence, Rome, and Venice in the textbook. Please choose an artifact that was not extensively discussed in the chapter for this project.
Then talk about the following.
Historical context: What was going on in this time and place in history? Politically? Religiously? Economically? Socially?
The artist’s life: What consistent themes show up in the artist’s work? What are her or his areas of interest? What other works is the artist well-known for and why?
The artist’s technique: How was your artist affected by the artistic movements of the day? Does his or her art reflect any of the characteristics of an artistic movement? Why or why not? What techniques does your artist use?
Your task by the end of the week is to create a 5- to 7-minute video or narrated slide show that unpacks the techniques used by your artist and explains your group’s interpretation of the artifact. Your interpretation is the critical aspect of this project—it’s like the thesis statement that holds the project together. Answering the above questions will help your group make a solid interpretation.
Please post your video or presentation here by the end of the week, and carefully use APA formatting to help with any research you wish to integrate. Please make sure you include a reference slide or submit a reference page with a video.

Week 4 Assignment
REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT EXPERIENCING THEATER
Plays are meant to be performed rather than read. The purpose of dramatic arts often extends far beyond the words written on a page—staging, lighting, costumes intonation, expression, and audience experience are all part of the experience of a theatrical production. To help develop your understanding of Othello and the cultural role of the dramatic arts, you will view a production of the play this week and write a two-page reflection to explain your viewing experience. Please make sure you review the Assignment Connection portion of this week’s lesson, as it will provide some additional help.
Below, please find two adaptations of Othello.

(1981, William Marshall version)
You may also find this short interview helpful:
Is Othello a Racist Play? (Links to an external site.)
For this assignment, you will view one of the above versions of Othello. You will also find this website (Links to an external site.) valuable in helping you understand how to analyze a play. Once you’ve gone through the website link and watched the play, please complete a reflection that addresses the following.
Identify the performance that you have selected and why you chose that performance.
Describe the staging, lighting, costumes, and characters of the performance. How do these match or revise the written version of the play?
What type of mood and tone does the performance create? How?
What parts of the play are easier to understand through performance? What are some details that stood out through the performance?
What does the performance suggest about the role of theater in contemporary culture? (Please write a strong paragraph that thoughtfully answers this question.)
Be sure to submit your assignment.

Week 5 Assignment
TIMELINE PROJECT PRESENTATION OUTLINE
This week you will begin your Timeline Project by producing a detailed outline that identifies the artifacts by period that you will investigate. Your outline should include the following.
An identified artifact for each period described in the Course Project Overview
The name, period, producer (if applicable), and image of each selected artifact
A quick three- to four-sentence analysis that explains the significance of the artifact to the specified period.
This will not only help you create the foundations for your Week 8 Timeline presentation but will also help you see how all of the pieces of this class fit together and give you an opportunity to demonstrate how much you have learned about being a student of history and the humanities. I hope you will take this opportunity to find some aspects of each period that interest you. You are not limited to the events and/or artifacts listed in your textbook. The sky is the limit!
In Week 5, you will prepare the first five elements listed in the Periods to Discuss.

This week, you will complete the Timeline Project you began in Week 5 with the submission of your formal presentation. The point of this project is to help you see how all of the pieces of this class fit together and give you an opportunity to demonstrate how much you have learned about being a student of history and the humanities.
