use Weber’s concepts and Ritzer’s model of McDonaldization to assess to what degree the university is an Iron Cage of Rationality / AKA—A McDonaldized organization. For each part of Ritzer’s model (efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control), use a scale from 0 to 10 to rate the university with regard to the four major characteristic of McDonaldization, where 0 represents no emphasis on efficiency whatsoever (or calculability, predictability, or control) and 10 represents total and complete emphasis on efficiency. For each part of the model, present a case that determines to what degree the university fits the characteristic in question. This “case” should include examples from the university that illustrate the degree you have determined. For example, if you believe that a university scores a 5 on efficiency, then you will need to provide a balance of examples where the university is efficient and inefficient. If you believe a university scores an 8 on efficiency, you will need to convince the reader that there are more examples of efficiency at the university than inefficiency.
After you have presented your case for each of the four characteristics, determine and discuss overall to what degree the university is McDonaldized and if the university rationalization produces irrationalities of rationality. If so, how and if not, how does this university avoid this? In this section you are addressing the consequences of the university degree of McDonaldization and should relate this to your life and that of other students—the consequences could be positive or negative, such as the irrationality of rationality. Your discussion should be contextualized within Weber’s and Ritzer’s ideas about rationalization.
As you write the paper, you should briefly define or describe each part of the model as you are using terms and presenting your examples (e.g., what does “efficiency” mean). These kinds of descriptions should only be a few sentences in length. The focus of the paper should be the examples from and assessment of a university. You must use data sources and somewhere in the beginning of the paper, briefly overview the data sources you will be drawing on to make your arguments.
