Prompt Critique and analyze a type or set of stereotypes in media representations using theories and perspective discussed in this unit. First. Select a type or set of stereotypes in media representations that are particularly troubling to you. For example, a set of stereotypes might be different representations of women you see in the video game, Grand Theft Auto. Or, you could focus on a specific type of stereotype seen across a range of media such as the transgender as a "sign" of "deception" in advertising discussed in the gender stereotyping instruction or the "Model Minority" stereotype of Asians in sitcoms and other programs. Or, you could select a specific film or program or set of programs and analyze the stereotypes you see in it/them (like the Disney video or other examples in this week’s instruction). Second. To explain and demonstrate the stereotype(s), you can post images/screenshots, a link to a video and/or just narratively describe the stereotype(s). For your post: Critique and analyze the representations you selected using at least 4 different theories or perspectives including at least two from a social scientific perspective and two from more cultural critical perspectives. Note key distinctions in approaches and theories. Try to reference at least two studies or relevant research findings that relate as well! If there isn’t a specific study relevant to the stereotype you are discussing, you can consider the implication of studies that are discussed (i.e. if certain results were found for other media representations, what implications might that have for the effects yours?) You might approach this in one of two ways, either briefly applying a large range of theories and perspectives OR going deeper in applying just the two each, but I would like to see you demonstrate that you have at least a basic working knowledge of both social scientific theories/perspectives and specific studies from instruction and the cultural critical perspectives introduced in this week’s lesson. Explain the key differences between the two perspectives and identify key distinctions between specific theories/approaches. So, you might divide your answer into 4 paragraphs — with a heading for each of 4 perspectives/theories OR you might divide it into two — one for social scientific and one for cultural critical perspectives and apply different theories and research under each of those. OR you might identify a couple different stereotypes and have a paragraph for each of those where you apply different perspectives and research. Whatever works best for you! However you organize it, to make sure you are covering at least 4 theories/perspectives and BOTH social scientific and cultural critical perspectives AND discuss specific research from instruction as it relates as well. I encourage you to bold key terms you use in your answer. Another tip is to be sure that you do more than just name a theory or study in your answer . briefly explain the rationale of the theory or explain the study and how it applies so that I know you understand it.
