DQ2 Capstone Project: Topics of Interest
Discuss any two challenges facing nurse leaders as they work toward transforming healthcare environments with a patient-centric focus. Explain two strategies that nurse leaders can use to either effect change, bridge the dichotomy between medicine and nursing, or influence members of the interdisciplinary team to implement patient-centered approaches. Integrate and make reference to readings from the text and one article from the literature to support your comments. Also, include relevant personal experiences, what new learning emerged from the discussions, how you embrace values or question ethical situations, and ask questions to enhance the spirit of inquiry.
Each of you will be developing a Capstone Project as an individual assignment. In Module 1 we will be discussing potential topics of interest for your Capstone Project. You will refine your topic into a nursing initiative that is based on best evidence. In Modules 2 through 4 we will continue to address your topics and refine your project as a scholarly paper. You will also modify your project into a power-point presentation. You will present your completed power-point slides to your classmates (Module 5 Week 10) prior to dissemination to a selected group of participants as a poster/slide presentation of your project (Modules 6-8 or Weeks 11-14).
Discuss areas of interest and potential topics for your project. Suggestions for this assignment can focus on any number of issues, initiatives, or practice topics. NOTE: The project will require a paper and poster/slide presentation of your work (see criteria in the syllabus). The review of the literature is your starting point to discover general background information about the selected topic. Take a look at the review of the literature library resource (Links to an external site.). This will save you valuable time searching your topic. Remember: Your librarians (Links to an external site.) are always here to help you! Topics cross over all types of settings in healthcare and the community. Criteria related to the project and your presentation will continue to be addressed in Modules 2-4. A presentation of your slides to your peers and professor is required in Module 5.

DQ2 Capstone Project: Issues and Stakeholders
Reflecting upon your project, begin to research the literature and explore the current articles that describe background information about your topic. Don’t forget to refer back to the Library Course Page (Links to an external site.) for help. Identify a few problems or issues relevant to your topic, what groups are directly or indirectly impacted by these issues, and the nurse’s role and responsibility related to the topic. Remember, in Modules 3 through 4 we will continue to refine your project as a work in progress before you present your completed power-point presentation of your project to your professor and classmates (Module 5 week 10) and to your selected group (Modules 6-8 or weeks 11-14).
Faculty and peers will provide informal feedback to your project as a work in progress. Please submit an attachment of your project in the discussion area for additional feedback.
As you begin to draft your project, for this discussion:
State your project title and describe 2-3 issues or problems related to your topic. Cite a minimum of two sources to support this discussion.

You may begin to draft slides of your project presentation as you complete different sections of the capstone project as a paper assignment. For example, begin with the Title of the Project and the Description of the Issue or Problem for the paper and create one or two slides that highlight the criteria for that section of the paper (problem, stakeholders, nurse’s role and responsibility).
Continue to make arrangements to present your project as a poster/slide presentation to a professional group or community participants prior to week 10 of this course. Identify potential date, time and participant group, organization, or community setting where or with whom the Capstone Project will be presented.

DQ1 Culture and Professional Practice
How does a nurse leader influence others to advance practice environments that embrace a culture shift away from hierarchal systems to shared governance centers? In this discussion we will explore your ideas for re-creating practice environments within health care organizations that illustrate innovation, authenticity, creativity, and empowerment.
Present to your peers the kind of culture you would create and support as an innovator and authentic nurse leader within the organization’s healthcare delivery system that promotes healthy environments for its employees.
Provide two exemplars and show how each incorporates one of the following within your discussion: innovations in today’s environment; empowerment within staff and inter-professional teams; inspirations to advance organizational vision and shared successes.
Apply your text readings and one published article related to organizational culture, authenticity, and/or innovations in healthcare to support your responses to the discussion question noted above. Also, advance the discussions with reflective and thoughtful comments/feedback that addresses personal experiences, new understanding of innovations, and challenging traditions of work environments.

DQ2 Capstone Project: Description of the Initiative
As you have been developing your capstone project, it is important to sit back and think about what you are learning from your literature searches. The literature review will build support for your capstone project with empirical and theoretical literature. Continue to refer back to the Library’s Course Page (Links to an external site.) for additional assistance as you progress in the development of your project. Therefore, as you discuss your proposed initiative and anticipated outcomes, integrate the literature throughout your presentation. However, it is also important to show the nursing framework that provides the impetus that moves your initiative forward. In this discussion, we will focus on describing your capstone project initiative, the anticipated outcomes with empirical support, and the application of nursing theory/principles that support your project initiative.

DQ1 Moral Reasoning and Care Model/Moral Courage
Tell your story of a personal experience with moral courage. Explain a situation or circumstance where you observed or participated in a situation when moral courage was displayed.
Review the module notes and readings, and reflect upon why you think more people do not engage in moral courage when experiencing a conflicting situation. Relate the importance of where one is situated along the stages of moral reasoning and if one is too many stages beyond another individual, what may be the underlying issues of understanding another’s perspective?
Provide 1 exemplar of a time when you experienced a conflict and the action(s) you took in response to the conflict. Explain those action(s) from the perspective of Kohlberg’s and Gilligan’s stages of moral reasoning and levels of caring, respectively. Reflect upon this experience and identify what you have learned (new knowledge) and what challenged your assumptions and resulted in you engaging in unlearning or understanding something from a different perspective.
Discuss why you identified yourself as being at that stage and how this aligns with your beliefs and assumptions as a professional nurse. Think about your emerging identify as a BS prepared registered nurse and describe what you might do now, at this moment in time, to change or reinforce the action you took when faced with conflict. How does this support becoming the professional nurse you want to be?

In this first activity, each of you will modify the participant survey provided and modify it to reflect your project initiative. This participant survey should reflect the individuality of your initiative and will be distributed to your audience to complete at the conclusion of your presentation. This survey will give you feedback on the overall satisfaction and effectiveness of your presentation and the delivery of your presentation.

This is a PowerPoint presentation of your project’s initiative prior to the formal presentation to your selected audience. Refer to the Capstone: Project Presentation Criteria and Rubric in the assignment area as you refine and complete your power-point slides.
