Some of the legal matters of priority for the Health Information Technician to uphold are patient safety, patient information security, and confidentiality of the patient’s medical information. According to USF Health, laws and regulations are intertwined with ethical issues. AHIMA’s Code of Ethics states that there are ethical duties in health information management. HIM professionals must protect the privacy and security of a patient’s health information, disclosure of health information, maintenance of that information, and the readiness and wholeness of the health information.
