Research Paper Requirements
The research paper for this course will involve a comprehensive review of a specific problem in corrections today. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate your knowledge of the specific topic chosen, your review of relevant research into correctional services applied to the topic, and your ability to identify focused, logical, actionable changes to address needed developments. This paper requires insightful engagement with criminological and criminal justice research within the context of corrections, and analysis of current correctional practices and services. The paper may include a brief case study of a specific offender to help illustrate the broader challenges in corrections in America. Papers must include the following components:
· TITLE PAGE: title of paper, name of student author, course and course number, name of professor, date of submission.
· ABSTRACT: (up to 120 words) concise statement that identifies the topic, key concepts, issues addressed, the central (or most important/significant) findings, overall conclusion and key recommendation. The abstract is usually the last thing that you write.
· INTRODUCTION: provide the reader with key information about the subject and explain the size and scope of your focus. The introduction should address the issues you will cover, summarize theories and principle assumptions involved, and briefly identify key findings and recommendation.
· CASE STUDY: provide a brief (i.e., 2-3 page) case study to illustrate the importance/complexity of your chosen topic. This will provide some initial grounding for the reader, and may connect to your in-class presentation. Relevant contextual details should also be presented to give the reader insight into the case.
· RESEARCH: present peer-reviewed research work within corrections that help address practices, theories, and insights into the nature of the problem, and efforts to address it formally. Identifying and unpacking multiple research studies will help demonstrate comprehension of the complexities involved, and will establish the relevance of your identified recommendations to come.
· RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION(S): discuss opportunities for improvement. Recommendations should identify concrete actions intended to affect change or improvement to the chosen problem. Your suggestions must be logically considered, and able to be put into practice in a realistic manner (i.e., suggesting a release of all gang offenders is not reasonably practical nor grounded in sound theory). Why would these changes help law, social functioning, or serve correctional needs? If applicable, you can include any recommendations you have regarding future research as well.
· BIBLIOGRAPHY AND/OR REFERENCES – The paper will require reviewing current relevant research literature, including empirical studies and data from corrections or other law enforcement sources, as well as factual details of your case study. All factual details must be properly cited within the text and referenced at the end. Requirements include citing at least 5 separate empirical sources, including refereed journal articles, book chapters, or other formal studies, and preferably 2 formal government or law enforcement sources, such as state corrections or Bureau of Justice Statistics reports. All outside sources may be retrieved from reputable web sources but must be fully and accurately sourced and cited. Wikipedia is NOT acceptable as an empirical source of information. You are highly encouraged to make use of the library.
Additional specifics:
· Consistent formatting style in-text and references (APA preferred, but not required)
· Size 12 font, 1” margins, professional font (e.g., Times New Roman)
· Double spaced
· 18 – 25 pages, with flexibility on the upper end (not counting title page, references, abstract)
Do’s and Don’ts
DO use sub-headers to organize and distinguish material that applies to different issues under a major caption. This also helps prevent run-on sentences and overly long paragraphs that might otherwise cause your reader to get lost or overwhelmed by detail.
DO provide tables, graphs, charts, or illustrations IF they directly help in communicating your information. DO NOT use these as “filler” material.
DO use spell check and review grammar, sentence construction, and check for proper punctuation! If you intend to request help from the Reference Librarians and folks in the Writing Center, be sure to begin the effort early in the semester and be considerate of the significant demands that are being made on the time and good nature of those who are trying to help you.
You are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to begin work early.
