Tips and tricks for responding online thoughtfully (Links to an external site.)
Since this is our first discussion board, introduce yourself to your classmates and tell us a little about yourself!
Related to the chapters,
Please write an “initial post” (by Friday 2/5 by 11:59 pm). Please answer BOTH the following two questions:
After reading the chapter, how important is assessment within the current field of clinical psychology compared to the earliest days of the field?
Both intelligence and personality assessment have greatly changed since the early days of Wechsler’s first intelligence test and Rorschach’s inkblots. Based on the progress made in psychological assessment, how do you picture the future of psychological assessment? For instance, will computerized assessment become the dominant form of test administration? What might be some advantages and disadvantages of such a progression?
Please thoughtfully respond to at least TWO classmate’s answer by Sunday 2/7 by 11:59 pm.
Let me know if you have any questions – look forward to your posts and responses!

Current Controversies in Clinical Psychology (Read Chapters 3)
After reading Chapter 3, please post and address the following questions.
Do you think clinical psychologists should be granted prescription privileges? Why or why not? How, if at all, might the ability to write prescriptions affect the practice of clinical psychology?
What are some potential ethical dilemmas of online psychotherapy and assessment provision? What benefits might online psychological treatments possess?

Discussion 3
Cultural Issues in Clinical and Counseling Psychology (Read Chapters 4)
For your initial post this week
Think about the importance of cultural issues to clinical and counseling psychology that you read in the text.
Have you ever had a course or formal training on the topic of cultural diversity? If so, what topics did your course or training include? Were there any elements that were not covered that you think should be included in such a course?
If you were designing a formal course on cultural diversity, what elements would you include? Be sure to include texts, readings, and experiential activities and explain why you are including these (e.g. how addressing a particular topic will help a counselor?)

Ethical Issues in Clinical and Counseling Psychology (Read Chapters 5)
Hi everyone,
For your initial post this module, address both of the following questions:
What type of multiple relationships would you judge to be unethical? Provide several examples and your rationale for selecting these cases. By contrast, what types of multiple relationships would you judge to be ethical? Provide several examples and your rationale for selecting these cases.
In your opinion, how ethical is “conversion therapy?” What constitutes “affirmative treatment” for LGBT clients? What are potential benefits and drawbacks of conversion therapy? How would you respond to a lesbian, gay, or bisexual client who sought treatment to achieve a heterosexual orientation?

Discussion 5
Abnormality & Diagnoses (Read Chapters 7 & 8)
For your initial post, address the following two major questions:
Who should define abnormality?
What motivations might encourage various groups to seek influence on this definition (if any)? For example, why might a pharmaceutical company seek to influence the definition of abnormality? Why would clinical or counseling psychologists? Psychiatrists? Managed care companies? The government?
Do clients benefit from formal diagnoses? What aspects of assigning a DSM diagnosis may prove beneficial? What aspects may prove unfavorable? Think about this from both the clients’ and “therapists’ perspectives.

Discussion 6
Intellectual and Neuropsychological Assessment (Read Chapters 9)
For your initial post:
Imagine a patient admitted to the hospital following a car accident in which he sustained a head trauma. The morning after the crash, a neuropsychologist enters the patient’s hospital room and attempts to administer a brief neuropsychological test battery. How might this patient—who only yesterday was in a car accident—respond to being asked to remember words and short phrases, draw pictures from memory, and other such similar tasks? How might you deal with any resistance the patient might mount to completing the assessment?

Personality Assessments (Read Chapter 10)
For your initial post (due Friday March 26 by 11:59 pm)
Since we are talking about personality this week, consider the following questions using your own life and experiences.
Do you believe that an individual will “project” his personality onto ambiguous stimuli (like with the Rorschach Inkblot Method)? Why or why not?
Have you ever noticed a time in your life in which your personality shaped how you viewed an ambiguous situation? What happened?

Discussion 8
General Issues & Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (Read Chapter 11-12)
For your initial post, please address BOTH questions:
Why is it important to query multiple sources when investigating the effectiveness of psychotherapy? How might a client’s opinion be biased? How might a psychologist’s opinion be biased? How might an outside party, such as a managed care company, be biased?
In what ways may the concept of therapist as “blank screen” be interpreted differently based on a client’s cultural background? Could any of these potential interpretations be harmful to the therapeutic alliance?

Discussion 9
Thoughts on Existential Psychotherapy
For your initial post:
Use your own words, explain what your thoughts are of Existential psychotherapy—the idea that we are all essentially alone in the world and knowledge of this can cause anxiety? Do you believe this theory can explain all types of psychopathology? Can you think of patient characteristics or traits that might suggest that this type of therapy is a good match for the patient? How about traits that might suggest this would be a therapy mismatch for the patient?
Consider the following factors. For example, did you agree with their thoughts on what Existential therapy is? Did you like his or her suggestions regarding who might benefit from Existential vs. who might not (explain why and why not)?

Discussion 10
Stress (Read Chapter 18)
A lot of different “specializations” were covered through chapter 16 to 19. As end of semester is coming up, let’s focus just on one part of it.
In your opinion, does stress really affect physical health? Do you have any anecdotal experiences with this phenomenon? If so, please share them with the rest of the class. After watching the TED talk about stress with Kelly McGonigal (Links to an external site.), has your opinion changed?
Were you surprised to learn that 75–90% of all visits to health care providers result from stress-related disorders and that those who are stressed are six times more likely to be hospitalized for a physical ailment than those who are not? Has the level of stress you experience ever affected your health, for example, during or after finals week?
