Example of the activity Below – Pizza make and Bake ( TC – target child who is 4 year old, C1 – Child 1 , C2 – child 2 , C3 – child 3, A1 – adult 1 , A2 – Adult 2 )
Example – TC is playing in the home corner on and off for most of the session. She is concentrating hard and talking to herself although it is difficult to hear her speech. After she leaves the home corner she walks around the room not settling. A1 asks TC “Hi would you like to go to the shop to buy some fruit and vegetables?” TC replies “No” but after a few moments she is walking slowly over to the shop area. She goes inside and starts to talk to C1 while standing by the plastic fruit and vegetables. She is frowning, picks up an apple says “I’m daddy” “I like apples” “we have them in my house”. C1 takes the apple from TC and says ” we have red ones”. C2 comes in and picks up a bunch of grapes. She says ” do you wants to buy these?” TC says “No I’m not shopping. I don’t have a bag” C1 says “if you don’t have a bag you can’t shop.” “bye bye” TC leaves and heads towards the home corner. TC sits down and starts to bang a pot on the table. She is doing this for a few seconds and puts a plastic slice of pizza into the pot and playing pretend cooking. C3 comes over to TC and joins in the pretend cooking. C3 shows TC how to put the pizza slice into the oven. C3 says “Look this is how you cook a pizza”. TC takes another slice and puts it into the oven and keeps doing in with more slices. C3 leaves the home corner and TC moves towards the sink. She is pretending to wash her hands. TC takes a pot and puts a tomato in. she is placing in on top of the cooker pretending to do cooking. A2 comes into the home corner and talks to TC ” Hi what are you cooking?” TC smiles and replies “Pizza with tomato” ” but I don’t have any ham”. A2 says to TC “would you like to go shopping?” TC nods. A2 hands a shopping bag over to TC. “there’s a bag now you can go shopping and buy ham” TC smiles and heads over to the shop area with her bag. C1 is still in the shop and as soon as he sees TC he asks ” what would you like to buy today?” TC is carefully looking at the fruits and vegetables and replies “I’m making pizza” “I want ham” ” that’s €2″ says C1. TC offers imaginary money.
I will be doing an activity with TC to see how involved she is with room activities and to see how she was socialising with her peers after staff noticed that she seemed very withdrawn after a period of time she spent in the hospital. For this observation it is important that we do a group activity to see how she was socialising with her friends. I have chosen to do a group activity with children from the Montessori room. During the observation TC spent most of her time in the home corner. She appeared to like pizza’s and cooking. So I decided to do a pizza baking activity. There are 10 children in this room. It would be an opportunity for TC to work together in a group with her friends. We decided to do the activity in the Montessori room instead of the kitchen for health and safety reasons. We didn’t want the children exposed to anything hot such as an oven or anything sharp like a knife.
