Annotated biography/ literature review
First steps
Read the notes I gave you in my email response. If you submitted a proposal but did not receive my response, email me ASAP with your preferred email address and I will forward it. If my notes included revisions to your source list or research question, please email me your revisions by 10/31 at latest.
For those of you who need to revise your source list, please read the following carefully:

https://guides.lib.berkeley.edu/c.php?g=83917&p=3747680
You should have five scholarly, secondary sources for this part of the assignment.
For those of you who need to revise your research question, please re-read the following and review the examples at the bottom for distinctions between unclear/clear and simple/complex questions.
https://writingcenter.gmu.edu/writing-resources/research-based-writing/how-to-write-a-research-question
For the next part of the assignment, you will write an annotated bibliography for these 5 sources.
Put the sources into Chicago Style format using this guide: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/chicago_manual_17th_edition/chicago_style_introduction.html
READ and take notes on your sources
For each source, write 200-250 words summarizing, assessing, and reflecting on it.
Summary (1 paragraph) Paraphrase the main arguments and summarize the topics covered
Assessment (1 paragraph) Evaluate whether the source is useful and reliable. Ask whether/what biases the author has. Identify the authors intended audience and the goal of their paper. Elaborate on how this source compares to the others in your bibliography.
Reflect (1 paragraph) Determine how the research fits into your project. Describe whether and how it was helpful to you. Has it changed how you think about your topic? How does it help to shape your argument? How will you use this source in your research paper? Be specific. Think about how the source will serve as evidence for an argument you want to make, or how it will provide a counter-argument that you will debate in your paper.
DUE DATE: 11/11 (I have extended it slightly so you have time to revise your proposals and resource lists if necessary, and to read your sources thoroughly before writing the assignment.
Grading rubric:
Your grade will be based on your completion of all the above components. The midterm is worth 25 points in total. Your proposal was worth 5 points. The remaining work will be worth 20 points, broken down as follows:
5 points sources are appropriate (scholarly, secondary sources) and in the correct format
5 points summary demonstrates a) you have thoroughly read your sources; b) you have effectively identified the key points of the article or other source; c) you have concisely paraphrased, NOT quoted at length
5 points assessment demonstrates a) you have researched and reflected on the author and audience; b) you have investigated how the author substantiates her arguments and made an educated assessment of the sources reliability as well as its potential blind spots or biases
5 points reflection demonstrates a) you have thoughtfully considered how this source fits into your project; b) you have detailed how you intend to use the source in your paper
Extra credit (up to 5 points): Write an additional paragraph identifying and discussing what other sources would be useful for you to develop your argument. After reading and analyzing the five sources in your annotated bibliography, is there additional information that you think youd need to answer your research question convincingly?
