Managing Conflicts
There are many different types of conflict and many ways to resolve them. Communication is the most important component in managing conflicts and working on a resolution. Visit the University of Arizona Global Campus Library and find a peer-reviewed academic article on managing conflict and conflict resolution using communication. Select one article to share with the class.
Provide the author, year, article title, and a brief summary of the article and its findings. Discuss why conflict occurs and the communication processes used to manage or resolve conflict. Be sure to include a properly formatted APA reference at the end.

Conflict can be productive. Although when most people are surveyed, they have a negative view of conflict.
Explain how conflict can have productive results. What are some skills needed to effectively manage conflict? Discuss why many people have a negative view of conflict. Identify ways that a person can begin to view conflict in a positive manner.

DQ1 Personality Type and Conflicts
We each have unique personalities and this affects how we handle conflict. In this assignment, you will be learning more about your personality type by taking a free personality test. Complete the Enneagram Test with Instinctual Variant results (Links to an external site.). There are 52 questions, and it will take about 15 minutes to complete.
Share your results with the class. Discuss how do you think your personality type affects your ability to resolve conflicts? Explain how your personality type plays a role in the communication process and the negotiation process for resolving conflict.

DQ2 Applying the S-TLC System
The S-TLC system for responding to conflict teaches us to stop, think, listen, and communicate. For this discussion, read the scenario below. Put yourself in the role of Maria and apply the S-TLC system to help her respond to the conflict appropriately. Be sure to thoroughly analyze the conflict and identify what Maria’s goals should be. Include the use of I-statements to help Maria communicate with her boss.

Case Study Scenario Maria is an account assistant for mid-sized company with three offices in the region. She has worked in this position for almost six years. During this time she has worked for several account managers that have left the organization or has moved to different departments. Maria has developed a very good working relationship with many of the external customers and has developed into the “go-to” person at the office for customer information. Due to the slow economy, sales have been down and the senior executives have decided to consolidate the three local offices. Senior management consulted with Maria’s manager, but not with Maria, when gathering information to make the changes. One of the results that came from this reorganization included several changes to Maria’s job description and how customer accounts were going to be handled. Maria was not happy with these changes and felt that the changes could also have a negative impact on the customer relationships that have been formed. She wants to share her frustrations about these new changes.

DQ1 Conflict Climate
The conflict climate is the psychological atmosphere the individuals perceive. This climate can be harmful or nurturing. Share an example of a situation in which abuse of power, competition, distrust, or defensive behavior created a harmful climate in a conflict situation. Identify the behaviors that created this environment. What behaviors would change this into a nurturing climate?

DQ1 Autonomous and Positive Face
Supporting an autonomous and positive face can be challenging. There are times when an autonomous and positive face can create conflict.
Provide an example of a time that this has happened to you or someone you know in your professional and personal experience. What did you do to resolve the issues of autonomous and positive face? Are the strategies you used for each different?

Your boss has asked you to lead a group of eight of your coworkers for a new project that will change several elements of your department. This is your first time in a leadership role and you anticipate that there will be a certain amount of conflict within this new group.
