Athletes also employ psychological strategies to help control arousal levels, alleviate anxiety, and maintain a steady mood, all of which aid in their performance at any point throughout a competition, event, or game to remain in the moment and perform at their best.
According to the Inverted U Theory, an arousal continuum can be used to quantify an athlete’s energy, momentum, motivation, and stress. The best athletes learn how to regulate their arousal levels as much as possible to focus in order to perform at the highest levels. These feelings and elements change throughout a game, match, round, or event.
According to the Drive Theory, performance equals arousal times skill level. The top athletes are able to control these factors in performance, which boils down to the link between performance and arousal levels.
