Assignment 2: Assessing and Treating Patients With Sleep/Wake Disorders
Sleep disorders are conditions that result in changes in an individual’s pattern of sleep (Mayo Clinic, 2020). Not surprisingly, a sleep disorder can affect an individual’s overall health, safety, and quality of life. Psychiatric nurse practitioners can treat sleep disorders with psychopharmacologic treatments, however, many of these drugs can have negative effects on other aspects of a patient’s health and well-being. Additionally, while psychopharmacologic treatments may be able to address issues with sleep, they can also exert potential challenges with waking patterns. Thus, it is important for the psychiatric nurse practitioner to carefully evaluate the best psychopharmacologic treatments for patients that present with sleep/wake disorders.

o Carefully read and follow the assignment instructions, my announcement about the decision tree/case study from week 4, and review the grading rubric for grading criteria. Be sure you have all required elements (see grading rubric, assignment instructions and my detailed instructions from week 4). The ethical considerations may be included with the decision or in the conclusion.
o This paper should follow APA 7 format with a title page, reference page, in-text citations, etc.
o Your case study must have at least 5 credible academic sources, and although you may use the textbook, it will not count as 1 of the 5 required sources. Therefore, if the textbook is used, you will still need to use at least 5 more sources per the assignment instructions. WebMD is not an acceptable academic resource.
o While reading the case study, evaluate and research each option. Then select the option you choose (click on it) and continue forward through the 3 decision points. Not following instructions may result in a 0 or decreased grade.
o Follow the assignment instructions for each of the 5 pages, not including the title page or reference page, for this assignment. Do not exceed the page limits for any of the 5 parts. It is acceptable to have more than 1 page of references, but you need to keep to the page limits for the other sections of your paper. o Do not view or use other students work as this is cheating and will be treated as such. This includes but is not limited to: other students currently in this course in any section; students who previously took this course; students’ work posted online; students’ work posted on assistive sites; using other students’ work for your research or as guidance, etc. and all of these aforementioned are considered cheating. This is not allowed or permissible. When I grade, I will research this and if I find this has been done, I will start the Academic Integrity inquiry process for the College of Nursing program and program director to make the determination and establish the punishment if a violation is found.
o Your work should not match other student’s work.
o Paraphrasing using your own words, thoughts, understanding, and ideas is required.
o No direct quotes in your assignments, which will result in point deductions. I want to see that you understand the material and can apply this in patient case situations and in clinical situations with real patients.
