It can be somewhat difficult to distinguish the differences between what is managing change, and what is leading change. Managing change is more of taking on the role of ensuring that everything is going smoothly within the organization. I think of managing the change as the act of handling a lot of the issues that can arise, as well as how to deal with them in order to move on effectively. Managing is about also making sure that all of your employees are doing what they need to do in your specific area. Leading change is about being the one who is making sure that everyone in the entire organization is on board and motivated. The leader is the one who is more concerned with implementing the change as a whole, as well as how this change is going to affect the future of the organization on a much larger scale. The leader is less involved with the small issues that the manager can deal with internally. I think the advantage of being a change leader is that you get to be the one who puts everything into place with a vision, and then accomplish that vision for the greater good of the organization.

The difference between leading change and managing change is vision and see through. The change leader has the idea, creates the process and influences the change. Whereas the change manager sees through the process to insure full execution. An example of leading change in my organization is our owner at the helm of the business. It’s through his leadership and drive that we share his vision. It’s actually more than that, he creates interest towards initiatives. I don’t think there is anyone in our organization that isn’t aware of his direction and goals as it’s often communicated. There is allegiance and trust from department managers that work to enforce change as they are all-in to support a leader that has manifested successful transformations. Not everyone is cut out to lead change but for those that are, I believe it to be an earned admirable role that comes with great responsibilities. Taking risk and leading change can work for or against you. The advantages to a change leader is when those risk prove to be beneficial to the overall health of the organization improving efficiencies, sales , productivity, profits, etc. It’s rewarding as a leader and promising to the employees.
