Prospectus Paper for Research

Your Research Topic
After doing this work, now you are ready to identify your research topic.
A topic, or subject, is a word or phrase. It is not a position. Examples:
Topic (good): College entrance exams
Pre-existing Argument (bad and not a topic): I will research placement tests and say why they are bad.
This is a reminder that we are not giving an argument yet. Instead, we are thinking about what we want to learn more about through research.
Once you have your sources later in the semester, then you will give an informed argument.
For now, think about what you want to learn more about in a open and fair manner.

Research
One of the main goals of our class is writing a full research paper. You will select your own topic for this – in other words – you choose what is interesting to you.
An important aspect of this research paper is that it is not just informational. Instead, you have to provide and support a stance. You are making an argument.
In order to decide on your stance and make your argument, you must first conduct careful and open-minded academic library research.
This is important to note because sometimes students will first decide on their argument and then search for research to support it. This is the opposite of what you should be doing.
The Prospectus Paper
The first step in this Research Project is to come up with a topic and explore what you know about it.
To help you explore this, you will complete a prospectus.
This paper is quite short because its purpose is to communicate your topic and share the reasons for your interest.
It is also highly structured to help make sure that it is focused and clear.
Structure
This paper is only two paragraphs.
Paragraph 1
Name the topic you are interested in.
Explain (with 2-3 reasons) why are interested in this topic.
Explain what potential biases you have and how you can become aware of them to be a more neutral researcher and avoid bias.
Paragraph 2
Address each question in this paragraph:
What do you already know about this topic?
What more do you need to know about this topic?
What are some common thoughts or common positions that others hold on this topic?
List 2-3 specific questions.
Do this at the end of your paper (after the two paragraphs)
Formulate your questions to elicit an argument or stance. For example:
Are college promise programs helping students successfully complete their coursework?
What are some benefits and drawbacks to college promise programs?
Should college promise programs be expanded statewide in California?
Format
400-500 words
MLA Format (Times New Roman, double-spaced, 12-point font)
Note: Some research topics can be closely related to our studies, work, community, education, or passion.
Please choose one of these topics: computer science major, restaurant waiter, and a passion for guitar.
