After completing my AACN Essential Self Assessment I scored a 35. The area that I need to improve in is in section V; Healthcare Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments. When answering the first statement “Demonstrate basic knowledge of healthcare policy, finance, and regulatory environments, including local, state, national, and global healthcare trends.” The first thing that came to mind is HIPPA, Danielle’s Law etc. However, it was more so talking about the knowledge about Affordable act care, also as known Obamacare. Which was implemented in 2010; according to the article “Understanding Obamacare” by eHealth, “Obamacare aims to reduce the amount of uncompensated care the average U.S family pays for by requiring everyone to have health insurance or pay tax penalty.” I found this very interesting because due to the fact that my daughter and I have insurance through my employer I never sought it necessary to educate myself on Affordable care. I feel it is very important for me to start learning more about these healthcare policies being that I am in the healthcare field. It will make me a much better nurse if I am able to educate my patients, their families, and the general public about health care policies instead of leaving such matters in the hands of politicians.
In contrast, I scored very well in section VI:Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcome. I strongly believe that “teamwork makes the dream work”. For instance, I work in nursing home, as the supervisor. Some days we are very short on staff, such as, the CNAs; and we get about three new admissions each night. A lot of my nurses refuse to step in and the job of the CNA because they are young and very had the experience before. I am usually very understanding to that because I wouldn’t want them to do something they are not comfortable doing; so I step in. When I first finished nursing school I worked in a hospital setting. Working in a hospital setting as a nurse you have to learn to work as a nurse and a tech. Also in the article Walk the Talk: Promoting Control of Nursing Practice and Patient Centered Care culture, it states “The rule is that decisions are made by the people “in the know,” those who have the most experience and knowledge about the issue or problem, and who are most affected by the outcomes. Which means that the person of people with the most knowledge are the ones to make the decisions.
Essential VIII: Professionalism and Professional Values discusses professional standards of moral, ethical, and legal conduct. Review the Professional Integrity Module-Academics and Practice at the beginning of the course (the first module). Then reflect on your own beliefs and values as they relate to professional nursing practice.
Ethical dilemmas are important for nursing professionals to develop and maintain professional identity. Also professional values are standards for actions accepted by professionals and individuals, it is useful to evaluate integrity and to reinforce professional person identity and performance. It is influenced by family, culture, religion, ethnicity, and environment. Professional nursing practice increased quality care job satisfaction and promote ethical competencies to deal with ethical issues and it helps with decision making when there is an ethical problem. Professional nursing integrity promotes good clinical skills, ethics, accountability, respect, interpersonal teamwork skills and good problem solving skills.
Academic integrity focuses one’s learning behavior and professionalism. Basically, when s student can express their own original ideas, cite source, and report their results accurately.
