Write a paper (approximately 10-12 pages in length) on an issue of contemporary moral
controversy. Here are some suggestions: Euthanasia, Abortion, Pornography, Capital
Punishment, Environmentalism, Animal Rights, Stem Cell Research, Cloning and
Genetic Engineering, Terrorism.
In this paper you are expected to do the following:
1. Clearly define the issue, i.e., explain what the facts are. (Example: What is
euthanasia? Are there different types of euthanasia? What are they? Etc.) 2-3
pages.
2. Explain the moral controversy surrounding the problem. Review and explain the
opposing arguments. In explaining the arguments you should be able to identify
the moral principles and/or theories upon which these arguments are based such
as natural law, utilitarianism, respect for persons, justice, etc.) 5-7 pages.
3. Explain which argument you find more persuasive and why. your personal 2
pages. (Page numbers are only approximations. I will grade your work based on
its quality not quantity.)
4. Your primary source should be the relevant chapter in the textbook (Chapters 9 –
21). Focus on the reading at the end of each chapter. These are academic, peer
reviewed articles that you need to analyze. However you may explore additional
sources as supplements. Be clear, accurate, precise, relevant, and logical (see
below).
All papers are to be typed, double spaced, Times New Roman style font, point size 12,
standard margins. Citations should be in MLA or Chicago style format
